Chapter 1 - The Shattered Emeralds

The crystal chandelier above table twelve hummed with a cold, unforgiving light that seemed to single out Elena Vance. Sitting in her heavy, custom-made emerald green one-shoulder evening gown, she looked every bit the tragic queen of a crumbling empire. The massive emerald earrings hanging from her lobes caught the glare, casting green, tear-distorted shadows across her hollow cheeks. Her matching bracelet felt like lead, a heavy shackle binding her to a decade of lies. Across the table, ten-year-old Julian sat rigidly inside his miniature black tuxedo, his small hands trembling as he covered his mother’s shivering fingers with his own.

"Mom, don't cry," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with a fierce, unnatural maturity. His dark eyes flicked toward the grand entrance of the St. Regis ballroom, burning with a mix of shock and unchildlike rage. "They aren't worth a single tear from you. Look at me, Mom. Please."

Elena swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she tried to force down the suffocating knot of grief. "You don't understand, Julian," she choked out, her voice barely a rasp. "It’s not just about us. It’s about everything your father built. Everything he stole to put that woman on his arm."

"I don't care what he built," Julian snapped back, his small chest rising and falling rapidly as he glared past the sea of tuxedoed backs. "He thinks he can humiliate us in front of the entire board of directors and get away with it? He’s wrong. I see the way they’re looking at us. They think we’re weak."

"Keep your voice down," Elena pleaded, pulling her hand away to clutch her emerald bracelet so tightly that her knuckles turned stark white. "Julian, your uncle Richard and your father have already signed the transfer documents. The lawyers finished it this morning. We have nothing left. We’re locked out of the accounts."

"They signed papers? Without you?" Julian stood up half an inch from his chair, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "That’s illegal, and you know it! Uncle Richard is a coward, and my father is a criminal. Why are you just sitting here taking this?"

"Because the courts belong to them, Julian!" Elena hissed, tears finally spilling over her lashes in a hot, silent rush. "We have no money left to fight them. The trust fund is empty. Our house is already in foreclosure. We are entirely at their mercy."

"Mercy?" Julian’s voice dropped to a terrifyingly calm whisper. He stared straight ahead at the couple now stepping onto the polished mahogany floor. "Mom, watch me handle them."
