Chapter 3 - Blood on the Linen

The sharp crunch of shattering crystal echoed faintly against the backdrop of the orchestra’s waltz, though the surrounding guests were too absorbed in the spectacle to notice immediately. Crimson blood welled quickly in the palm of Julian’s small hand, soaking into the snowy linen tablecloth in a dark, spreading stain. Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth to stifle a cry as she grabbed a cloth napkin and pressed it frantically against her son’s torn skin.

"Julian! What are you doing? Are you insane?" Elena whispered fiercely, her voice trembling as she tried to wrap the cloth around his bleeding hand. "Look at your hand! You could have severed a tendon!"

Julian didn't even flinch. He didn't look down at his bleeding palm; his unblinking eyes remained locked on the path of the white tuxedo jacket moving through the crowd. "Pain is temporary, Mom. Blood washes out. But humiliation lasts forever. And my father is about to learn what happens when you back a Vance into a corner, even a little one."

"You're bleeding all over your suit," Elena scolded through her tears, though her frantic movements slowed as she saw the eerie, unyielding calm in the boy's face. "Why didn't you cry? Why aren't you screaming?"

"Because screaming is for people who expect someone else to save them," Julian replied softly, pulling his hand away from her gentle grasp. He pressed his bloodied palm flat against the table, leaving a stark red imprint right next to his water glass. "No one is coming to save us, Mom. We have to burn the bridge down behind them so they have nowhere to run."

As if sensing the intense weight of their gaze, the man in the white tuxedo finally turned his head toward table twelve. Marcus Vance stood tall, his sharp black lapels framing a face that had once smiled down at Julian with pride, but now wore only a cold, dismissive smirk. Beside him, Vanessa leaned in close, whispering something in his ear that made Marcus chuckle softly.

Marcus raised his own glass toward his son, his eyes cold and dead. It was a gesture of supreme arrogance, a silent message telling them that they were ghosts at their own funeral. He was celebrating his complete corporate takeover, confident that his wife and son were powerless to stop the merger scheduled for Monday morning.

Julian’s lips parted into a razor-thin, mirthless smile that looked chillingly adult on his ten-year-old face. He reached into his inner jacket pocket with his uninjured left hand and pulled out a small, heavy black flash drive, placing it deliberately on the bloody napkin.

"What is that?" Elena asked, her eyes widening as she stared at the matte-black device.

"That," Julian whispered, leaning in close so only she could hear, "is the backup server key for Vance Global. Uncle Richard left it in the home study safe last night, thinking I was asleep upstairs. It contains every offshore transfer Marcus made over the last three years."

Elena’s face drained of what little color it had left. "Julian... if they find out you took that, they’ll put you in a juvenile detention center and throw away the key. We have to put it back immediately."

"We aren't putting it back," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as the flash drive caught the light. "We’re uploading it to the federal prosecutors before the board meeting even starts tomorrow."
