Chapter 4 - The Midnight Server Room

The digital clock on the dashboard of the rented sedan glowed a harsh 2:14 AM as the engine idled quietly in the underground parking garage of the Vance Global headquarters. The monolithic glass tower loomed above them like a dark monolith against the rainy city skyline. In the backseat, Julian sat in his rumpled black tuxedo, his palm heavily bandaged with gauze and medical tape that Elena had managed to secure from a twenty-four-hour pharmacy.

Elena stared out the rain-streaked window at the towering skyscraper, her hands trembling against the steering wheel. "This is madness, Julian. Private security patrols every floor every twenty minutes. If we get caught inside the building after hours, we’ll be arrested for corporate espionage. Your father would love nothing more than to lock us away."

"We aren't going in through the front doors, Mom," Julian said calmly, his eyes fixed on the maintenance elevator shaft map glowing on his phone screen. "Uncle Richard always keeps his access badge in the side pocket of his gym bag in his executive locker on the forty-fifth floor. He hasn't changed his locker combination since 2018. It’s his wedding anniversary."

Elena turned around in her seat, staring at her son with a mixture of awe and sheer terror. "How could you possibly know that? You’re ten years old!"

"When you sit quietly at family dinners while they discuss business deals, you learn that powerful men are creatures of lazy habits," Julian replied, slipping his phone into his pocket and opening the car door. "They think children are invisible. They think we don't listen, don't comprehend, and don't remember. They’re about to find out how wrong they were."

"Wait, Julian—let me come with you," Elena pleaded, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "If anyone is going to take the risk, it should be me. You’re just a child."

"If we both go, we double the chances of getting caught," Julian said firmly, gently pulling his arm free. He adjusted his black bow tie with his good hand, looking every bit the tiny corporate assassin. "You stay in the car. Keep the engine running. If I’m not back down here by three o'clock sharp, you drive straight to Federal District Attorney Harrison’s home address. Hand her the flash drive, tell her it’s from me, and don't look back."

Before Elena could argue further, Julian slipped out into the cold, drizzling rain, his small black shoes splashing silently against the wet concrete of the garage. He moved with a purpose that defied his years, slipping through the loading dock service door just as the night watchman turned his back to light a cigarette.

Elena watched the heavy metal door close behind her son, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every tick of the dashboard clock felt like a countdown to total destruction or miraculous salvation. She pressed her forehead against the steering wheel, praying to a God she hadn't spoken to since her wedding day.

Ten minutes passed. Then fifteen. At exactly 2:45 AM, the dashboard screen flickered violently, and the car's built-in navigation system chimed softly as a massive data packet began downloading automatically from the skyscraper's main server room directly to the flash drive plugged into the car's console.
