Chapter 7 - The Broadcasted Confession

Richard fumbled frantically with his smartphone, the screen casting a pale, jittery blue glow across his panicked face. The sonic alarm cut off abruptly, plunging the garage into an eerie, heavy silence broken only by the steady drip of rain outside. Richard swiped open his screen, his eyes widening in absolute horror as a live video stream loaded automatically at the top of his notifications.
It was his own face, captured in high-definition crystal clarity, sitting in his private office three nights ago, signing his name to the fraudulent asset transfer documents while laughing about how easily he and Marcus were going to ruin Elena. Below the video, a live ticker displayed the total sum of the embezzled funds: forty-two million dollars.
"No..." Richard whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at the screen. "That’s impossible. The local drive was encrypted. How did he...?"
"You left the master decryption key in your personal email drafts folder, Uncle Richard," Julian’s voice spoke again, sounding closer this time, echoing from the top of the concrete stairwell railing just twenty feet away.
Richard whipped his head around, his eyes straining against the gloom until he spotted a small figure standing on the landing above. Julian stood bathed in the pale red glow of an emergency exit sign, his black tuxedo jacket slightly askew, his bandaged hand resting calmly on the metal railing.
"You little bastard!" Richard roared, lunging forward with a speed that belied his age, his hand reaching out to grab the boy before he could retreat into the stairwell.
Before Richard could take two steps, the heavy steel fire door at the top of the stairs slammed open with a deafening crash. Two federal agents in dark windbreakers and tactical vests stepped out into the stairwell, their badges gleaming under the emergency lights, weapons drawn and pointed directly at Richard’s chest.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Nobody move!" the lead agent barked, his voice echoing authoritatively through the garage. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and wire fraud. Put your hands behind your back immediately."
The two private security guards dropped their crowbars instantly, raising their empty hands into the air and stepping away from the vehicle. Richard froze, his foot still planted forward, his face turning an unhealthy shade of grayish-white as the heavy steel cuffs were slapped onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
Elena pushed her car door open, stumbling out onto the wet pavement and running toward the base of the stairs, her emerald green gown trailing through the puddles. She didn't care about the mud or the ruined fabric. She reached the bottom of the landing and threw her arms around Julian’s small waist, burying her face against his chest and sobbing uncontrollably.
"You’re safe... oh, Julian, you’re safe," she gasped, squeezing him tightly.

Julian looked down at his mother, his expression softening just a fraction before he raised his eyes past her shoulder. Standing at the entrance of the underground parking ramp, illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of arriving police cruisers, was Marcus Vance. His white tuxedo jacket was soaked with rain, his expression shifting from arrogant amusement to sheer, unadulterated shock as he stared at his handcuffed brother and his ten-year-old son holding the cards that had just destroyed his entire empire.
