Chapter 12 - The Mortgage Trap

Richard stepped boldly into the conference room, brushing past the struggling bailiffs with an air of manic triumph. He tossed a thick manila folder directly onto the center of the walnut conference table, the heavy papers sliding across the polished wood and coming to a rest against Julian’s bandaged hand.
"Read it and weep, nephew," Richard laughed, a harsh, grating sound that bounced off the glass walls. "While you were playing corporate chairman in your little black tuxedo, I used my remaining offshore liquidity to buy out the primary commercial mortgage from Sterling Bank. As of nine o'clock this morning, I am the primary lienholder of this building and every square foot of property Vance Global owns. If you don't pay me thirty million dollars in full by sunset today, I foreclose on the headquarters, and you and your mother are legally locked out forever."
Elena stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. "You’re insane, Richard! You’re already facing twenty years in federal prison for wire fraud, and now you’re committing active extortion against the court-appointed interim chairman?"
"Extortion?" Richard sneered, walking closer to the table and leaning over until his face was just inches from Julian’s. "It’s strictly business, my dear sister-in-law. Survival of the fittest. The boy wanted to play in the big leagues with the sharks? Well, congratulations, Julian. You wanted the crown, now you get to watch the throne burn down around you."
Julian didn't flinch, nor did he break eye contact with his uncle. He slowly picked up the manila folder containing the mortgage transfer papers, flipping through the pages with his good hand while ignoring Richard’s theatrical posturing.
"You bought the debt from Sterling Bank," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "For twelve million dollars cash, using your brother’s unrecovered Swiss bank account routing number ending in 4402."
Richard’s manic smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing slightly. "How do you...?"
"And in doing so," Julian continued, seamlessly cutting his uncle off, "you knowingly transferred tainted, illegally obtained federal funds across state lines to acquire a commercial asset while under active federal indictment."
Julian set the manila folder back down on the table, sliding it neatly back toward Richard. He looked up, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, absolute deadliness that made even the adult bailiffs standing at the door shift uneasily in their boots.
"Which means," Julian finished softly, "you just handed the Department of Justice the exact piece of evidence they needed to revoke your bail and seize every remaining dime you had hidden away. Arthur, call Agent Miller at the FBI."
Richard’s face drained of color, the triumphant smirk completely vanishing from his lips. He lunged forward across the table, his hands grasping wildly at Julian’s jacket collar. "You little demon—!"
Before Richard’s fingers could tighten around the fabric, the conference room doors swung open again. Special Agent Miller of the FBI stood in the doorway, flanked by two armed federal agents, holding a fresh, green-stamped arrest warrant in his hand.

"Richard Vance," Agent Miller announced loudly, stepping into the room with crisp authority. "You are under arrest for federal financial witness tampering, asset concealment, and violation of bail terms. Put your hands behind your back."
