Chapter 10 - The Interim Chairman

The silence in the penthouse was so absolute that the distant sound of thunder outside felt muted and distant. Marcus stared at the folded document in Arthur Pendelton’s hand as if it were a venomous snake. His face drained of all color, leaving him looking suddenly old, defeated, and profoundly small against the backdrop of the towering glass windows.
"That's... that's impossible," Marcus stammered, taking a half-step backward until the back of his knees hit the edge of the leather sofa. "He's ten years old! A child cannot legally hold a corporate seat or execute executive orders under state law!"
"Under standard corporate law, you would be correct, Marcus," Arthur replied calmly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "However, your father—Julian’s grandfather—inserted a specific contingency clause into the founding partnership agreement back in 1994. It states that in the event of severe corporate malfeasance by the primary executive, the legal blood heir may assume interim operational control via proxy representation until a court-appointed guardian or the heir reaches majority. And since Elena Vance holds the proxy rights..."
Arthur glanced respectfully toward Elena, who stood tall and proud beside her son, her emerald earrings catching the light like a victorious shield. "...the transition is entirely legal, binding, and already filed with the state supreme court clerk."
Julian stepped forward, his bandaged hand reaching out to take the heavy, red-wax-sealed document from Arthur’s fingers. He didn't smile or gloat; his expression remained a mask of chilling, mature composure. He opened the heavy paper, scanned the signatures of the board members at the bottom, and then folded it neatly before slipping it into the inner pocket of his black tuxedo jacket.
"Thank you, Arthur," Julian said, his voice carrying the calm authority of a seasoned board chairman. "Please escort my father and Miss Sterling off the premises immediately. Their security clearances have been revoked, and their access codes to all corporate properties have been permanently deactivated."
"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, lunging forward toward Julian, but the two federal marshals instantly stepped into her path, crossing their arms and blocking her way with impassive expressions. "Marcus, do something! Call your lawyers! Don't let a ten-year-old throw us out into the street like trash!"
Marcus didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at his son with a mixture of disbelief, betrayal, and a terrifying spark of reluctant respect. He finally understood that the boy standing before him was no longer his son in the traditional sense; he was the executioner sent to dismantle everything Marcus had built on a foundation of lies and greed.
"Get out," Julian repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an absolute finality that left no room for argument. "You have ten minutes to gather your personal belongings. After that, the federal marshals will assist you with the rest."
As the federal agents escorted a hysterical Vanessa and a stunned, silent Marcus toward the private elevator, the heavy mahogany doors closed behind them with a dull, heavy thud that signaled the definitive end of an era.
Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension of the last twenty-four hours finally draining from her shoulders. She reached out and placed a trembling hand on Julian’s shoulder. "It’s over," she whispered softly, a lone tear escaping her eye, though this time it was a tear of pure relief.

"No, Mom," Julian replied, turning his dark eyes toward the window where the storm clouds were finally beginning to break over the city skyline, revealing the first pale rays of dawn. "It’s just beginning."
