Chapter 9 - The Safe House

The safe house smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and industrial disinfectant. It was located on the third floor of an unassuming federal building downtown, far away from Arthur’s corporate empire and the glittering illusion of wedding venues.
Julian sat at a metal interrogation table, his tuxedo jacket ruined, his hands cuffed loosely to a metal ring in the center of the wood. Across from him sat Agent Miller, the federal prosecutor who had intercepted their chaotic escape at the docks.
"You've been a very busy man, Julian," Miller said, sliding a thick file folder across the table. "For five years, the government believed you took a two-million-dollar payoff to disappear and hand over key insider testimony against Arthur Sterling's shipping conglomerate."
Julian stared at the folder bitterly. "I never took a dime. Arthur kidnapped Clara, threatened to kill Maya, and gave me a choice: walk away and pretend my family was dead, or watch them die in a staged car accident. I chose to live so they could survive."
Miller sighed, rubbing his temples. "We know that now. Clara spilled everything once the medics patched her up at the hospital. But knowing it and proving it in front of a federal judge are two entirely different animals. Arthur owns half the federal judiciary and three senators."
"Then why am I here instead of a black site?" Julian asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Because of what was in the back seat of that car," Miller said softly, leaning forward. "That newborn baby isn't just your child, Julian. She is the biological collateral Arthur forced Clara to carry as a surrogate to guarantee your permanent silence. And more importantly... she holds the biometric key to the offshore accounts where Arthur laundered the cartel money."
Julian felt the blood drain from his face. "My daughter is a vault?"
"Literally," Miller confirmed grimly. "Arthur implanted a micro-encapsulated data chip beneath the infant's skin during a private medical procedure at one of his clinics three days ago. That’s why his men were hunting you down with such desperate urgency tonight. They didn't just want you dead; they needed to harvest the chip before federal regulators seized the assets."
Julian slammed his cuffed hands against the table, the metal ring rattling violently. "They put a tracking device and a data bank inside a newborn baby?!"
Before Miller could answer, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room burst open. Victoria stood in the doorway, her hair still damp, wearing an oversized federal windbreaker over her torn wedding dress. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but hardened into steel.
"Agent Miller," Victoria said, her voice shaking with restrained fury. "My father's legal team just filed a writ of habeas corpus claiming the child in the next room is legally his corporate property under a pre-signed guardianship contract."
Julian stared at her in horror. "Victoria... what are you talking about?"
May you like
"My father set up the entire wedding, Julian," Victoria said, walking slowly toward the table, her gaze locking onto his with profound sorrow. "He didn't just manipulate you. He engineered our entire relationship from day one to ensure I would be the ultimate legal guardian of that baby when the asset matured tonight."
