Chapter 3 - The Hospital Band

The dim amber light of the diner sign spilled through the windshield, casting long, fractured shadows across the infant's face. Julian stared down at the tiny wrist band, his breath hitching in his throat as the faded letters and numbers swam before his tear-filled eyes. The surname printed on the plastic strip was his own, paired with a birth date from just three days ago.

"Where did you get this?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. "Maya, look at me. Whose baby is this?"

Maya pressed her lips into a thin, grim line, refusing to answer immediately. She shifted the baby gently, patting the infant's back with a practiced, motherly rhythm that broke Julian’s heart all over again. A seven-year-old child should not know how to soothe an infant with such weary perfection.

"Aunt Clara gave her to me," Maya finally murmured, her eyes darting nervously toward the dark expanse of the parking lot outside. "She said if anything happened to her, I had to bring her straight to you. She said you were the only one who could keep us alive."

Julian’s blood ran cold. "Clara? Your mother's sister? I thought she cut ties with us years ago. Where is she, Maya? Why isn't she here with you?"

Before Maya could open her mouth to reply, a pair of blinding high beams suddenly flashed across the rear window of the sedan. A heavy, black SUV drifted into the parking lot with reckless speed, cutting off their exit and pinning Julian’s car against the grease-stained brick wall of the diner.

Julian’s instincts kicked in instantly. He threw his arm across the passenger seat, shielding Maya and the baby. "Stay down," he commanded in a harsh, breathless whisper, his eyes locked on the tinted windows of the menacing vehicle idling just ten feet away.

The driver's side door of the SUV swung open with a heavy metallic thud. A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out, his face obscured by the brim of a fedora and the deep shadows of the overhanging roof. He walked with a deliberate, unhurried stride toward Julian’s car, his heavy boots crunching loudly against the loose gravel.

Maya clutched the baby tighter, letting out a stifled gasp of pure terror as she buried her face into Julian’s jacket.

"Daddy, they found us," Maya sobbed, her small body trembling uncontrollably. "They followed us from the motel."

Julian reached for the door handle, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged animal. He knew he couldn't run, and he sure as hell couldn't let anyone touch his daughters. He pushed the door open and stepped out into the biting night wind, squaring his shoulders against the encroaching stranger.

"Step away from the car," Julian demanded, his voice carrying a dangerous edge he didn't know he possessed.

The man stopped three paces away, tilting his head up slowly. A thin, cynical smile played across his lips as he reached inside his trench coat.

"Nice wedding, Julian," the man said smoothly. "Too bad you missed the honeymoon. Your rich bride's father sends his regards."
