Chapter 13 - The Final Confrontation

The high-altitude wind whipped the rotor wash of the federal helicopter into a roaring gale, flattening Julian’s hair against his forehead and snapping the edges of his ruined tuxedo jacket like a flag in a hurricane. He kept his weight pressed squarely against Marcus’s chest, pinning the ruthless fixer to the cold, wet glass of the penthouse terrace railing.
"It's over, Marcus," Julian shouted over the deafening whine of the turbine engines. "Your boss's empire is finished. The ledger is in my pocket."
Before Marcus could spit out a retort, two federal tactical officers descended from the hovering aircraft via fast-rope, landing heavily onto the terrace with their weapons drawn. They moved with practiced efficiency, kicking Marcus’s assault rifle across the slick glass and dragging him off Julian with brutal precision.
"Clear!" one of the agents shouted, slamming plastic flex-cuffs around Marcus's wrists and shoving him toward the cabin door of the helicopter.
Julian stood up slowly, wiping rain and sweat from his eyes. He turned around to find Victoria standing near the shattered doorway, trembling slightly as she clutched the frame for support. The adrenaline that had sustained her through the break-in was rapidly fading, leaving behind the profound, exhausting reality of everything she had lost tonight.
Agent Miller stepped off the helicopter ramp, walking over to Julian with a solemn, respectful nod. He extended his hand, and Julian shook it firmly.
"You got the ledger?" Miller asked quietly.
Julian patted the thick leather book securely tucked inside his inner jacket pocket. "Every page. Every bribe, every extortion threat, every fabricated document. It's all in here."
Miller let out a long, relieved breath, glancing over at Victoria. "Then Arthur Sterling's legal firewall has just been completely dismantled. The federal magistrate is already signing the emergency injunctions to freeze all of Sterling Industries' assets. The baby's guardianship will revert back to you permanently, Julian."
Victoria slowly walked over, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she looked between Julian and the federal agent.
"What about my father?" Victoria asked, her voice cracking slightly. "Where is he?"
"Federal marshals raided his estate twenty minutes ago," Miller answered gently. "He's in custody. He'll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison again."
Victoria closed her eyes, letting out a shaky breath that sounded like a weight of a thousand pounds finally lifting from her shoulders. She turned back toward Julian, the anger and fury that had defined their initial encounter at the altar completely gone, replaced by a devastating, hollow vulnerability.
"I guess... I guess this means there won't be a honeymoon," Victoria whispered, offering a tragic, humorless smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Julian stepped closer, gently reaching out to brush a damp strand of blonde hair away from her forehead, his thumb lightly touching her cheek.
"No," Julian said softly. "The wedding is over, Victoria. But... we still have a family to rebuild."
