Chapter 5 - The Abandoned Docks

The sedan crept down the desolate, potholed industrial road like a ghost hunting for its grave. Tall chain-link fences topped with rusted barbed wire lined both sides of the tarmac, holding back the dark, churning waters of the industrial harbor. Thick fog rolled in off the bay, swallowing the glow of the distant streetlights and wrapping the old shipping docks in a claustrophobic, damp shroud.

Julian peered through the rain-streaked windshield, his knuckles locked onto the steering wheel. In the passenger seat, Maya clutched the sleeping infant to her chest, her dark eyes scanning the abandoned warehouses looming like monolithic shadows against the gray sky.

"That's the building," Maya whispered, pointing a small, dirt-smudged finger toward a dilapidated brick structure with broken windows and a sagging corrugated metal roof. A single, flickering yellow bulb hung over a heavy side door, casting a sickly pool of light onto the wet concrete.

Julian pulled the car into a narrow alleyway behind a row of rusted shipping containers, cutting the lights and the engine immediately. The silence returned, broken only by the steady patter of rain on the roof and the low, muffled gurgle of the harbor nearby.

"Stay in the car, Maya," Julian instructed firmly, reaching for the door handle. "Lock the doors from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

"No," Maya retorted instantly, her jaw set with stubborn defiance. "I'm not staying here alone while they have Aunt Clara. If they come back, we die together."

Julian looked into her eyes and saw the unbreakable spirit of her mother staring back at him. He realized arguing with her would waste precious minutes they didn't have. He unlocked his seatbelt and nodded grimly.

"Okay," Julian conceded. "We stay together. But you keep the baby close, and you stay behind me at all times."

They slipped out of the car into the freezing drizzle. The air smelled of salt, rotting wood, and industrial chemicals. Julian guided Maya through the shadows, keeping close to the brick wall of the warehouse until they reached the heavy side door. It was unlocked, pushed slightly ajar, letting a thin sliver of warm, artificial light spill out onto the pavement.

Julian placed his hand against the cold metal, pushing it slowly inward. The hinges let out a high-pitched, agonizing squeak that echoed loudly in the cavernous interior. He held his breath, waiting for a shout, a gunshot, or footsteps, but the warehouse remained eerily quiet.

They stepped inside, finding themselves in a massive, vaulted shipping floor filled with rotting wooden crates and discarded machinery. In the center of the room, illuminated by a harsh overhead spotlight, sat a wooden chair.

Clara was tied to it, her head slumped forward, her dark hair matted with blood.

Julian rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside her, but as he reached out to untie the ropes, a heavy iron door slammed shut behind them with a deafening bang.

From the shadows above, a cold, mocking voice echoed down through the cavernous space.

"Welcome to the end of the line, Julian. Did you really think Arthur would let you walk away with his darkest secret?"
