Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs Shut

The heavy iron door reverberated through the hollow warehouse, sealing off their only obvious exit like a tombstone falling into place. Julian scrambled to his feet, shielding Maya and the infant behind him as he scanned the catwalks looping around the ceiling high above. The harsh overhead spotlight buzzed loudly, casting long, erratic shadows that danced across the rotting wooden crates.

"Show yourself, Arthur!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. "You wanted me, you have me! Let the woman and the children go!"

A slow, deliberate clapping echoed from the darkness of the upper tier. A heavy-set man in an expensive tailored suit stepped out onto the rusted metal grating, leaning casually against the railing. It wasn't Arthur himself, but rather Arthur’s chief enforcer, a ruthless corporate fixer named Marcus who had terrorized half the city's underworld for a decade.

"Arthur doesn't deal with loose ends personally, Julian," Marcus called down, a cruel smirk twisting his lips. "He leaves the messy work to professionals. And right now, you’ve made a complete mess of his daughter's wedding day. Do you have any idea how much money that cost the family?"

"Victoria didn't know anything about this!" Julian snarled, his hand instinctively reaching back to push Maya further behind a thick wooden crate. "She was just a pawn in Arthur's game to keep me tied to his empire!"

"She's a corporate asset, just like you were supposed to be," Marcus corrected smoothly, pulling a silver cigarette case from his pocket and flipping it open. "And assets that go rogue get liquidated. It's strictly business, Julian."

On the chair in front of them, Clara stirred. Her head snapped upward, and a low, pained groan escaped her cracked lips. Her eyes fluttered open, wide and bloodshot, frantically searching the room until they locked onto Julian.

"Julian... run..." Clara rasped, her voice barely a whisper above the hum of the spotlight. "It's a... it's a setup... the baby..."

"Shut her up," Marcus barked into the darkness.

Before Julian could reach Clara to untie her bonds, two masked men dropped down from the catwalk behind them, moving with terrifying speed. One of them lunged forward, grabbing Maya by the arm and yanking her away from Julian with brutal force.

Maya screamed, dropping her grip on the infant as she was thrown violently against a wooden crate. The baby tumbled through the air, wrapped in its cream-colored blanket, hurtling downward toward the jagged, debris-strewn concrete floor.

Julian moved with the desperation of a drowning man. He threw himself forward, diving horizontally across the filthy floor, stretching his arms out as far as they could possibly go.

His fingertips brushed against the soft fabric of the baby's blanket just a fraction of a second before the infant hit the ground. Julian absorbed the full impact against his shoulder, rolling hard across the concrete to protect the fragile bundle cradled tightly against his chest.

He scrambled back to his feet, gasping for air, clutching the crying infant safely in his arms. He spun around to face Marcus’s men, his eyes blazing with a feral, protective fury.

But as the two masked men closed in on him from both sides, a blinding flash of headlights cut through the high windows, followed by the deafening screech of tires pulling up outside the main loading bay doors.

Marcus froze on the catwalk, his cigarette dropping from his fingers as the heavy metal doors began to groan and buckle under the weight of a vehicle ramming straight through them.
