Chapter 10 - Unraveling the Web

The harsh fluorescent light of the safe house hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow over the room. Julian stared up at Victoria, the horrific realization settling deep into his bones like frozen lead. Every romantic dinner, every shared laugh, every carefully planned detail of their engagement—it had all been a calculated chess move orchestrated by Arthur Sterling to bind Julian to his empire permanently.
"You didn't know?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking. "Victoria, tell me you didn't know about the baby."
Victoria flinched as if struck, stepping back a pace. Her lower lip quivered before she pressed it into a hard, defensive line.
"Of course I didn't know, Julian!" Victoria hissed, her voice rising in defensive anger. "Do you really think I would walk down an aisle surrounded by white flowers to marry a man who was already tied to another family? Do you think I want to be a pawn in my father’s sick, criminal games?"
Agent Miller cleared his throat loudly, breaking the escalating tension between them. He pulled a pen from his breast pocket and tapped it against the metal table.
"Save the marital disputes for a divorce court," Miller intervened dryly. "Right now, we have a bigger problem. Arthur’s legal team is moving faster than our cybercrimes division can process. If that habeas corpus order is signed by a sympathetic judge within the hour, the federal marshals will be legally obligated to hand that infant over to Arthur's corporate custody."
Julian yanked against the handcuffs, the metal scraping his wrists. "You can't let that happen! That's my daughter! If she goes back to Arthur, she won't survive the night once they extract that chip!"
"The law doesn't care about your paternal instincts, Julian; it cares about jurisdiction and paperwork," Miller said grimly. "Unless we can prove right now, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Arthur’s guardianship contract was signed under explicit duress and corporate extortion."
Victoria stepped closer to the table, resting her hands on the cold metal surface. She looked down at the case files scattered between them, her expression shifting from heartbreak to calculated determination.
"My father keeps a physical ledger of every bribe, extortion threat, and illegal transaction he’s ever executed," Victoria said quietly. "He keeps it in a wall safe behind his mahogany desk in his penthouse study."
Miller raised an eyebrow skeptically. "And how do you propose we get into a penthouse guarded by private paramilitary security and federal wiretaps?"
Victoria looked up, locking eyes with Julian. A strange, fragile understanding passed between them, bridging the chasm of their ruined wedding day.
"Because," Victoria said softly, "my wedding reception was supposed to be held in the ballroom downstairs from his penthouse. The staff elevator keys are still on my key ring."
Julian shook his head, a wave of panic washing over him. "No. Absolutely not. You're not going back up there, Victoria. It's suicide."

"It's the only chance we have," Victoria countered, her voice unwavering. She reached into the pocket of the federal windbreaker and pulled out a small, blood-stained velvet box, placing it gently on the table. Inside rested the diamond engagement ring Julian had given her just hours before everything fell apart. "You ruined my wedding, Julian. The least you can do is help me burn my father's empire to the ground."
