Chapter 9

The executive boardroom on the top floor of Vance Tower was designed to intimidate. Encased in reinforced glass that offered a panoramic view of the skyline, the room was dominated by a massive oval table crafted from polished walnut. By 11:45 AM, twelve senior executives and board members had assembled, their faces etched with nervous tension and whispered speculation regarding the sudden, unannounced absence of Eleanor Vance.

Arthur Vance walked into the room precisely at noon, leaning lightly on his cane. He was dressed in a dark charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, exuding the formidable presence that had defined his career for decades. Behind him walked Elena, carrying a sleek leather portfolio containing the newly secured forensic audit reports and digital backup drives.

Silence fell over the boardroom instantly. Several board members shifted uncomfortably in their leather executive chairs, glancing sideways at empty seats and whispering among themselves.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen," Arthur said, his voice resonant and steady as he took his seat at the head of the table. "I apologize for the abrupt nature of this emergency meeting, but events of the past twenty-four hours require our immediate, undivided attention."

Marcus Vance, a distant cousin and the senior vice president of regional operations, cleared his throat nervously. "Arthur, rumors have been circulating all morning regarding Eleanor. Security personnel were seen escorting her from the estate last night. The stock market opens in an hour, and investors are already asking questions about the emergency probate filings."

Arthur nodded calmly. "The rumors are true, Marcus. Eleanor Vance has been relieved of all executive duties, effective immediately. Furthermore, federal authorities have detained her pending an investigation into corporate embezzlement and financial fraud totaling over forty million dollars."

An audible gasp rippled through the boardroom. Papers rustled as executives scrambled to review their digital tablets for any indication of the shortfall.

"Forty million?" Marcus stammered, his face pale. "How is that possible? She controlled the charitable foundation and community outreach portfolios!"

"She also controlled the cryptographic keys to our subsidiary accounts," Arthur replied evenly. He gestured toward Elena. "Miss Elena Vance—no relation to our family, though possessing infinitely more integrity—discovered the discrepancy during last night's anniversary gala."

Elena stepped forward, opening her portfolio and connecting a portable drive to the boardroom's central multimedia display. The crisp, clean lines of the financial flowchart appeared on the massive screen behind Arthur, laying out the complex web of shell companies and unauthorized wire transfers with brutal, undeniable clarity.
