Chapter 4

The whisper of silk and the sharp click of heels echoed faintly as a security guard, summoned discreetly by one of the headwaiters, approached the table. Arthur raised a hand to halt the guard before he could intervene. This was not a matter for public spectacle; it required precision, discretion, and an immediate securing of the evidence before it could be sanitized or destroyed.

"Escort Mrs. Vance to the executive antechamber," Arthur instructed the guard in a low, flat tone that brooked no argument. "Ensure she remains there undisturbed. Do not let her use any communication devices."

Eleanor stood up so fast her chair tipped backward, crashing loudly against the polished floorboards. The golden sequins of her gown caught the ambient light, sparkling furiously as she lunged toward Arthur. "You can't do this! You're destroying everything we’ve built! You ungrateful, miserable old man!" she shrieked, her mask of polite sophistication completely shattered, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath. Two additional security personnel materialized instantly, gently but firmly restraining her arms and guiding her away from the table as she continued to scream obscenities into the quietening hall.

When the heavy mahogany doors of the banquet hall finally clicked shut behind Eleanor, the collective sigh of relief from the surrounding tables was almost audible. Arthur closed his eyes for a brief moment, rubbing his temples where a dull, familiar ache had begun to throb.

Elena remained standing beside his chair, her posture still composed, though a faint sheen of sweat lined her forehead. She had risked her job, her livelihood, and potentially her safety by stepping forward tonight.

"You took a massive risk, young woman," Arthur said, opening his eyes and looking up at her with newfound respect. "Why didn't you just let me drink it? It would have been easier to look away."

"Because my father was an honest man who worked in your warehouses for thirty years, Mr. Vance," Elena answered softly, her dark eyes reflecting the amber glow of the chandelier. "He taught me that silence in the face of malice makes you an accomplice. I couldn't watch you die tonight, not after everything you did for our community."

Arthur nodded slowly, processing the weight of her words. He reached out and picked up his smartphone from the table, dialing a direct, encrypted extension. "Director Harris," Arthur said when the line connected, his voice cold and resolute. "Lock down the estate's subterranean server room. Pull the biometric access logs for the wine cellar from the past forty-eight hours. And call district attorney Morrison. Tell him I have a confession to prepare."
