Chapter 11

Later that afternoon, after the boardroom had emptied and the emergency restructuring directives had been securely transmitted to all global branches of Vance Logistics, Arthur retreated to his private study. The warm autumn sunlight filtered through the leaded glass windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the quiet air.

He sat at his desk, holding a small, framed photograph of his late son, David. The picture had been taken during a family camping trip in the mountains over a decade ago. David was laughing, holding up a fishing rod with genuine joy, completely untouched by the corporate ambitions and ruthless machinations that would eventually tear their family apart.

A soft knock interrupted his quiet reflection, and Elena stepped into the room, holding a newly minted employee ID card bearing her name and her new title.

"They ratified the appointment unanimously fifteen minutes ago," Elena said softly, closing the door behind her. "The legal team is already drafting the transition agreements."

Arthur smiled gently, setting the photograph back down on the mahogany wood. "I knew they would. Even the most cynical corporate mind recognizes the value of a clean ledger, Elena." He gestured to the leather armchair across from his desk. "Sit down. Now that the corporate fires are extinguished, we need to talk about the personal wreckage left behind."

Elena walked over and sat down, her posture relaxed yet attentive. "You're thinking about Leo."

"I am," Arthur admitted, rubbing a hand over his tired eyes. "He’s fifteen years old, away at a boarding school in Vermont, completely shielded from what happened here last night. When he finds out his mother has been arrested for embezzlement and suspected of engineering his father's death... it will destroy him."

"He needs stability, Mr. Vance," Elena said quietly. "And he needs someone who isn't tainted by the ambition that poisoned this household. Have you spoken to the school headmaster?"

"Not yet," Arthur replied, a deep sigh escaping his chest. "I’m flying up to Vermont tomorrow morning. I want to tell him the truth myself, before the media storm breaks and the headlines tear his world apart. I wanted to ask... would you be willing to accompany me?"

Elena looked surprised, her dark eyes searching Arthur’s lined face for any sign of hesitation. "Me? Mr. Vance, family matters of this magnitude are deeply personal. I'm just an employee."

"You are the reason I am alive to make this trip," Arthur corrected gently. "And more importantly, you possess a clarity and grounding that I fear my family has lacked for generations. I would consider it a personal favor if you came along."

Elena paused, considering the weight of the request. She thought of her own father, who had worked tirelessly in the warehouses, instilling in her a fierce sense of duty and compassion. She nodded slowly. "I'll arrange my schedule for tomorrow morning, Mr. Vance. We'll make sure Leo hears the truth from people who care about his future."
