THE RED STEM CONSPIRACY / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier above the grand ballroom cast a fractured, prismatic light across the tables, glittering against the silverware and polished mahogany. Arthur Vance sat quietly at the center table, his posture straight despite his seventy years. He wore a crisp, tailored black tuxedo with a neatly tied bow tie, a garment that felt more like armor than celebratory wear. In his right hand, he held a heavy crystal glass filled with a deep, ruby-red vintage, swirling the liquid slowly as he prepared to honor the foundation's thirtieth anniversary. His silver hair and trimmed mustache caught the amber glow of the room, framing a face lined with decades of hard-earned wisdom.

Across the table, Eleanor Vance, his forty-year-old daughter-in-law, radiated an aura of calculated perfection. Dressed in a shimmering gold gown that caught every flicker of light and adorned with a magnificent diamond necklace that rested heavily against her collarbone, she beamed at the surrounding dignitaries. Her smile was practiced, radiant, and entirely hollow. She raised her own glass, eager for Arthur to deliver the toast that would solidify her position within the family empire.

Before Arthur’s lips could touch the rim of the crystal, a sharp, steady hand entered his field of vision. Elena, a thirty-year-old waitress wearing a pristine white collared shirt beneath a black vest and bow tie, gently pressed her palm against the stem of the glass. Her movements were deliberate and entirely devoid of panic.

"Sir, please don’t taste that," Elena whispered, her voice barely carrying over the ambient murmur of the string quartet playing in the corner.

Arthur paused, his breath fogging the edge of the crystal. He lowered the glass an inch, looking up into Elena’s steady, unblinking dark eyes. He noticed the absence of fear in her expression, replaced instead by a chilling, quiet determination.

Before Arthur could ask for an explanation, Eleanor’s veneer cracked. The silence between the old man and the waitress infuriated her. Standing up abruptly, her chair scraped loudly against the parquet floor.

"Do not embarrass this family!" Eleanor shouted loudly, her voice piercing the gentle acoustics of the banquet hall. Heads turned from adjacent tables, the murmurs instantly dying away. Eleanor’s face flushed a violent crimson beneath her perfectly applied cosmetics, her manicured finger pointing accusingly at Elena and Arthur.

Arthur ignored Eleanor’s outburst, keeping his gaze locked on Elena. Without missing a beat, the waitress slipped her hand into her vest pocket and pulled out a sleek smartphone, unlocking the screen with a practiced swipe. She angled the display toward Arthur, revealing a crystal-clear macro photograph of a wine glass stem wrapped meticulously with a tiny, inconspicuous red sticker—an identical mark to the one hidden near the base of the glass currently resting in Arthur’s trembling fingers.
