Chapter 5

The private antechamber of the grand banquet hall smelled faintly of aged leather, floor wax, and expensive cigar smoke—a sanctuary of old-money comfort that now felt like a holding cell. Arthur Vance sat behind a mahogany writing desk, the smartphone bearing the incriminating photograph resting squarely in the center of the blotter. Elena stood near the doorway, her hands clasped neatly in front of her white collared shirt, watching as the digital evidence was backed up to a secure, off-site cloud server.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Director Harris stepped inside, carrying a thick leather-bound ledger and a portable tablet. Harris looked pale, his suit slightly rumpled from rushing up from the subterranean security hub.

"You were right, Mr. Vance," Harris said without preamble, setting the tablet down beside the phone. "The biometric logs for the private wine cellar were accessed at 3:14 PM today. The authorization came directly from Mrs. Vance’s primary security profile. But that’s not all. We cross-referenced the cellar entry with the estate's internal financial routing system."

Arthur didn’t flinch. "Show me."

Harris tapped the screen, bringing up a complex flowchart of corporate subsidiary accounts. "Over the past fourteen months, there have been systematic liquidations of Vance Logistics stock holdings. Millions of dollars have been quietly funneled into offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands under a shell corporation named 'Aegis Holdings.' The digital signatures authorizing those transfers were executed using your master administrative credentials, but the metadata proves they were accessed from the east wing residence—Eleanor’s private study."

Elena stepped closer to the desk, her eyes scanning the glowing financial data. "That explains why the quarterly audits always showed minor, acceptable discrepancies," she noted quietly. "She wasn't just trying to remove you physically; she was draining the foundation to ensure that even if you survived, you'd have no empire left to protect."

Arthur stared at the glowing lines of code and numbers, a profound wave of exhaustion settling over his frame. He had mourned his son’s death for years, burying himself in work and trusting Eleanor to raise his only surviving grandchild, young Leo, away from the corporate shark tank. But Eleanor had weaponized that trust, turning his own home into a trap.

"Where is Leo right now?" Arthur asked sharply, a sudden spike of panic cutting through his fatigue.

"Master Leo is currently at the residential academy upstate," Harris replied quickly. "His tuition payments were cleared through the foundation this morning. He’s completely safe, Mr. Vance."

Arthur let out a long breath, resting his forehead in his weathered hand. "We need to secure the estate's physical archives before Eleanor's legal team attempts to execute any emergency power-of-attorney clauses. She’s cunning, Harris. She would have anticipated a contingency plan."
