Chapter 8

The first pale streaks of dawn began to bleed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Arthur Vance’s private study, casting long, golden fingers across the mahogany bookshelves and the Persian rug. The chaotic energy of the previous night’s gala felt like a lifetime away. Downstairs, the cleanup crew had long since departed, leaving the grand ballroom silent and empty.

Arthur sat at his desk, staring out at the manicured lawns of the estate where the morning dew caught the rising sun like scattered diamonds. A cup of black coffee sat untouched beside his hand. The heavy burden that had clouded his mind and body for months seemed to have lifted, replaced by a quiet, exhausting clarity.

There was a soft knock on the study door, and Elena entered, carrying a fresh tray with a steaming carafe of coffee and a porcelain cup. She wore her crisp white collared shirt and black vest, though the bowtie had been removed, resting neatly in her pocket.

"You should try to get some sleep, Mr. Vance," Elena said gently, pouring a cup and setting it within his reach. "The federal prosecutors have taken custody of the physical archives, and the board has scheduled an emergency quorum for noon to ratify the interim management transition."

Arthur looked up, offering a tired, genuine smile. "Sleep is for people who aren't trying to rebuild a lifetime's work in twenty-four hours, Elena. Besides, I have a feeling my waking hours are far more valuable right now." He took a slow sip of the coffee, savoring the warmth. "Tell me, what are your plans once the dust settles? Working as a catering supervisor isn't exactly the pinnacle of what a sharp mind like yours deserves."

Elena paused, her hands resting on the edge of the mahogany desk. "I was actually planning to finish my degree in forensic accounting next semester. This evening was... illuminating, to say least, but it confirmed what I’ve always suspected: numbers don't lie, even when the people manipulating them do."

Arthur nodded approvingly. "Forensic accounting. Vance Logistics has an entire department dedicated to compliance and risk analysis that could use someone with your specific brand of fearlessness." He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a heavy brass key, sliding it across the wood. "That unlocks the executive archive on the third floor. There are five years of unexpurgated financial records waiting for someone who knows how to read between the lines."

Elena looked down at the brass key, the weight of a new chapter of her life resting right beside it. She picked it up slowly, her fingers brushing the cool metal. "I won't let you down, Mr. Vance."
