Chapter 7

The sterile, fluorescent lights of Mercy General Hospital hummed overhead as Elena’s gurney was wheeled rapidly through the double doors of the emergency trauma bay. Marcus, the paramedic, stayed close to her side, steering the bed while subtly transferring the hidden flash drive from his pocket into the palm of a waiting social services liaison named Detective Miller, who had been quietly paged the moment Vance’s report hit the dispatch network.

"Stable fracture to the right tibia," Marcus reported to the attending physician, seamlessly passing the baton. "Patient also reported intentional trauma by a secondary party upon intake."

Dr. Hayes, an orthopedic specialist, nodded grimly. "We’ll get her prepped for immediate imaging and orthopedic stabilization. Detective, the room is yours for twenty minutes before we take her to surgery."

Detective Miller, a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored gray suit, stepped forward. She pulled up a chair beside the gurney, her expression a mix of professional detachment and genuine empathy. "Mrs. Vance, I’m Detective Miller. Officer Vance transmitted your preliminary statement, and Marcus handed over the drive. You’re safe here. Tell me what I need to know."

Elena took a deep, shuddering breath, the adrenaline finally beginning to wear off, leaving a dull ache in her bones. "My husband, Ryan, runs a multi-million-dollar shell corporation under the guise of an environmental charity. My father left me controlling shares of the real estate firm that funds his operations. Two months ago, I discovered he was planning to liquidate everything, frame me for mental instability, and institutionalize me to seize full control of our assets—and custody of my daughter."

Miller opened a sleek digital tablet, her fingers flying across the screen as she recorded every detail. "And the flash drive?"

"It contains complete financial ledgers, encrypted emails between Ryan and his corporate partners, and audio recordings of him admitting to the asset stripping," Elena said, her voice steady and resolute. "He thought he had me cornered in that kitchen. But he didn't realize I anticipated his moves."

"Why didn't you leave sooner?" Miller asked gently.

"Because of Sophie," Elena replied without hesitation. "Ryan controls every financial account, every communication line, and every legal loophole in our county. If I had walked out with a suitcase, he would have had me declared a danger to my child within twenty-four hours. I had to build a case that the system couldn't ignore. I had to force an intervention that would expose his entire network."

Miller nodded, her expression hardening with resolve. "We have cybercrime specialists analyzing the drive right now. If these files check out, a federal judge will sign search and asset-freeze warrants before you wake up from surgery. But you need to know something, Mrs. Vance—Ryan is not going to sit quietly while his empire collapses."
