Chapter 11

The private recovery room at Mercy General Hospital smelled of antiseptic and fresh linen. Sunlight poured through the large window, casting a warm, golden glow across the white sheets where Elena lay propped up against a stack of pillows. Her right leg was securely encased in a heavy white cast, resting comfortably on an elevated wedge.
The door clicked open softly, and Sarah, the social worker, guided little Sophie into the room. Sophie stopped just inside the doorway, her eyes wide as she took in the hospital bed, the monitors, and the pale, tired face of her mother.
"Mommy?" Sophie whispered, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly.
"Come here, my sweet girl," Elena said, her voice thick with emotion as she held out her arms.
Sophie broke into a run, carefully navigating around the medical equipment until she climbed up onto the edge of the hospital bed, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder. Tears spilled freely down Elena’s cheeks as she wrapped her arms around her daughter, pulling her close and breathing in the familiar scent of lavender shampoo. The physical pain in her leg vanished beneath the overwhelming wave of safety and love.
"I told you I was coming back," Elena murmured into Sophie's hair, kissing the top of her head repeatedly. "We're safe now, sweetie. No one is ever going to hurt us or scare us again."
Sarah stood near the doorway, watching the tender reunion with a gentle smile. She softly cleared her throat after a few moments, stepping closer to the bed. "Mrs. Vance, Detective Miller asked me to let you know that the federal warrants were executed without incident. Ryan and your mother are being held at the federal processing center downtown. Bail has been denied due to flight risk."
Elena looked up, her expression hardening slightly as the reality of their victory set in. "Thank you, Sarah. What happens next?"
"Social services will complete a standard post-crisis evaluation, but given the documentation you provided and the federal charges, full custody will automatically revert to you," Sarah explained reassuringly. "You'll have a temporary restraining order issued by noon tomorrow, giving you exclusive rights to the home and all personal assets."

"Good," Elena said firmly, tightening her protective hold around Sophie, who had begun to relax against her chest. "I want every lock changed within twenty-four hours."
"Already scheduled," Sarah replied with a reassuring nod. "Take all the time you need to rest. You've won the war, Mrs. Vance. Now it's time to heal."
