Chapter 12

Three days later, the federal district courthouse downtown was a circus of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters. Ryan Vance, flanked by two public defenders after his high-priced corporate legal team abruptly resigned upon reviewing the asset-freeze documents, walked up the granite steps in handcuffs. His light blue dress shirt was wrinkled, his tie entirely missing, and his gaze fixed squarely on the ground to avoid the blinding glare of the media.

Inside the third-floor courtroom, Judge Thomas Sterling—no relation to Evelyn—presided over the emergency arraignment with grim efficiency. He adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick dossier compiled by Detective Miller and the federal cybercrime division.

"Mr. Vance, you are facing multiple federal counts of wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, conspiracy to commit institutional fraud, and domestic coercion," Judge Sterling stated, his deep voice echoing off the mahogany-paneled walls. "How do you plead?"

Ryan stood at the defense table, his jaw clenched so tightly his teeth ached. He looked up at the bench, realizing there were no loopholes left to exploit, no shell companies left to hide behind. "Not guilty, Your Honor," he rasped, though the defiance in his voice was completely hollow.

"Given the overwhelming digital evidence and the clear risk of transnational flight, bail is formally denied," Judge Sterling ruled, slamming his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack. "You will be remanded to the federal detention center pending trial. Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs led Ryan away in chains, Detective Miller watched from the back of the courtroom. She pulled out her secure tablet and sent a quick, encrypted message to Elena at the hospital: Phase one complete. Ryan is locked down, and the judge granted full asset reversion.

Back at her hospital room, Elena read the message while Sophie slept soundly in a reclining chair beside the bed. A profound sense of peace settled over her shoulders. The two months of sleepless nights, secret planning, hidden flash drives, and calculated risks had finally borne fruit. She had stepped out of the shadow of control and reclaimed her life, her dignity, and her child.

Dr. Hayes walked into the room a few minutes later, checking her chart with an approving nod. "Your vitals look fantastic, Mrs. Vance. If you keep recovering at this pace, we can discharge you to an outpatient rehabilitation center by the end of the week."

"I'm ready, Doctor," Elena said, looking out the window toward the bright blue sky above the city. "I have a home to reclaim."
