Chapter 6

The paramedic, a seasoned professional named Marcus, felt the hard plastic object slide into his palm as he adjusted the Velcro strap around Elena’s injured leg. Marcus didn't flinch. His expression remained entirely neutral as he finished securing the splint, quietly slipping the drive into the deep pocket of his medical trousers. He caught Elena’s gaze for a fraction of a second—a silent communication forged in mutual understanding.

"Her pulse is elevated, but stable," Marcus announced, looking up at Officer Vance. "The leg is fractured. We need to transport her to Mercy General immediately for orthopedic surgery."

Ryan stepped in smoothly, his body language oozing eager cooperation. "Of course, of course. I’ll ride in the ambulance with her. We need to support her through this episode."

"Negative, Mr. Vance," Vance said, stepping firmly into Ryan’s path. The security officer’s tone left no room for argument. "Standard emergency protocol for a reported domestic altercation requires the primary resident to remain on-site until local law enforcement arrives to take a formal statement. You can follow us in your own vehicle once the police unit clears the premises."

Ryan’s smile faltered for a microsecond. "Surely that isn't necessary. This is a simple medical accident magnified by a psychological episode."

"It's standard procedure," Vance replied, his hand resting casually near his utility belt.

Evelyn stepped forward, her aristocratic composure slipping just enough to reveal her underlying arrogance. "Young man, do you have any idea who you are speaking to? My son-in-law is a principal benefactor of this security district. One phone call to the board of directors, and—"

"Ma'am, step back behind the island, please," Vance interrupted, cutting her off without hesitation. He had dealt with wealthy enablers before; their threats rarely survived contact with an active incident report.

On the floor, Elena let out a sharp breath of relief as Marcus carefully lifted her onto a rolling gurney. As they wheeled her past the kitchen island, Sophie broke away from Evelyn and ran alongside the gurney, her small hand reaching out to grab Elena’s fingers.

"Mommy, are you coming back?" Sophie whispered, big tears welling up in her eyes.

Elena squeezed her daughter’s hand with every ounce of strength she possessed. "I am coming back for you, Sophie. Don't be afraid. Just stay with Grandma, and remember what we practiced."

Ryan watched them leave, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. He knew Marcus had taken something. He didn't know what, but the sudden shift in Vance's demeanor confirmed that the control he had maintained over this household for years was fracturing beyond repair. As the ambulance doors slammed shut outside, Ryan turned back toward Evelyn, his voice dropping an octave. "Call the legal team. Tell them we need the emergency injunction filed before she reaches the hospital."
