Chapter 2

Sophie could no longer bear the suffocating weight of the silence and the cold words passing between the adults. Breaking away from Evelyn’s restraining grip, the little girl in the yellow floral pajamas sprinted across the kitchen floor. Her small feet padded frantically against the wood until she reached the towering marble island. Her tear-streaked face looked up at the sleek red emergency button embedded flush against the white stone surface—a direct line to a security network installed long before Ryan took control of the household communication systems.
With a desperate cry, Sophie slammed her small palm down onto the red button. A faint, high-pitched electronic chime echoed through the modern open-plan kitchen, signaling that a distress signal had been dispatched to an outside monitoring station.
Ryan snapped his head around, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated anxiety. The calm facade cracked, revealing the frantic desperation of a man whose carefully laid plans were unraveling in real-time. He stood up abruptly, towering over Elena, who still lay in pain on the floor.
"Grandpa, Mom is hurt!" Sophie sobbed, her high-pitched voice ringing with genuine fear as she looked toward the distant hallway leading to the garage.
Ryan dropped back down to his knees beside Elena, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Sweat beaded on his forehead, catching the bright morning light. Despite his anxiety, his voice dropped into a soothing, deceptive cadence designed to deceive any incoming audio feed. He looked intensely down at Elena, his face inches from hers, projecting a facade of deep concern for the benefit of whoever might be listening on the other end of that emergency signal.

"Sophie, stay with Mommy. I'm sending help now," Ryan said loudly, his tone dripping with false warmth. Deep emotional tension filled the kitchen, thick enough to suffocate everyone present.
Elena stared into Ryan’s eyes, reading the silent threat hidden beneath his words. He was playing a dangerous game, trying to hijack the emergency response before it even arrived. But the button had been pressed. The system was activated. Evelyn finally set her wine glass down on the counter with a sharp clink, her expression tightening as she realized the police or private security would soon breach their isolated world. The countdown had begun, and every second ticked louder than a bomb. Elena tightened her grip on the floorboards, her mind racing. She needed to buy time. She needed to ensure Sophie remained safe while the outside world finally cracked open the door to their carefully guarded prison.
