Chapter 4

The kitchen clock ticked forward with agonizing slowness. Only three minutes had elapsed since Sophie pressed the red button, yet the atmosphere had shifted from active panic to a tense, psychological standoff. Ryan remained kneeling beside Elena, his posture relaxed to the casual observer, but his muscles were coiled like steel springs. He was calculating his escape routes, weighing the likelihood of intercepting the responders before they could ask the wrong questions.
"They'll be here soon," Ryan murmured loudly, ensuring his voice hit the overhead intercom. He smoothed back his dark hair with a hand that barely trembled. "Just hold on, Elena. I'll explain everything to the paramedics."
"You don't need to explain anything to them, Ryan," Elena replied, her voice steady despite the searing pain in her right leg. She propped herself up slightly on her elbows, staring directly at him. "You only need to explain it to the investigators."
Evelyn scoffed softly, picking up her wine glass again, though she didn't drink. "Investigators, Elena? You truly believe a middle-class domestic dispute triggers federal oversight? You overestimate your importance. Ryan built his entire reputation on philanthropy and corporate compliance. No one is going to believe a hysterical woman with a history of anxiety."
"Anxiety was the diagnosis you paid for, Mother," Elena fired back, her words cutting through the kitchen like a scalpel. For the first time, a flicker of genuine irritation crossed Evelyn’s face, shattering her composed veneer.
Sophie buried her face in Evelyn’s skirt, overwhelmed by the venom in the room. "Grandma, I want to go to my room. I don't like it here."
"Hush, child," Evelyn murmured, stroking Sophie's hair with a hand that lacked tenderness. "We are staying right here to make sure your mother receives the proper medical attention."
Ryan’s jaw clenched. He knew Evelyn was losing her composure, and that was a dangerous variable. He needed to regain total control of the narrative before the front gate buzzed. He shifted his weight, his eyes darting toward the entryway. The smart-home tablet mounted on the wall flashed a silent notification: Perimeter gate unlocked for authorized emergency entry.

The timer was running out. Four minutes left. Ryan leaned in close to Elena once more, his voice dropping into a venomous register. "Listen to me very carefully. If you cooperate when they walk through that door, I will let Sophie stay with you until the custody hearing. If you try any of your clever tricks, I will ensure she is sent across the country before sunset."
Elena felt her breath hitch. He was threatening her with her child, weaponizing her deepest love against her. The agony in her leg faded into the background, replaced by a mother's primal fury. She realized then that Ryan was not just controlling; he was cornered, and a cornered man would burn down his own house to avoid losing. But Elena wasn't planning to let him burn it alone. She had hidden the backup drives containing the corporate embezzlement files in the most mundane place possible—inside Sophie's favorite oversized art kit, sitting openly on the living room shelf. All she had to do was survive the next few minutes.
