Chapter 5

The heavy oak front door chimed as the smart lock disengaged, followed by the firm, measured footsteps of uniformed personnel entering the foyer. Ryan stood up immediately, smoothing his light blue dress shirt and adjusting his tie with practiced grace. His transformation from a menacing tyrant to a frantic, concerned husband was seamless, a performance he had clearly rehearsed across years of deceit.
"In here! In the kitchen!" Ryan called out, his voice laced with manufactured distress as he walked toward the entryway to intercept the responders. "My wife fell—she slipped on some fruit and injured her leg badly. We've been waiting for you."
Two private security officers, accompanied by a local paramedic carrying a heavy trauma kit, rounded the corner into the bright modern kitchen. The lead officer, a weathered man with sharp eyes named Vance, scanned the room instantly. His gaze took in Evelyn standing rigidly by the counter, Sophie hiding behind her skirt, Elena lying in pain on the floor surrounded by spilled oranges, and Ryan projecting an aura of desperate helpfulness.
"Sir, we received an automated distress signal triggered by a manual override button," Vance said, his voice flat and professional as he approached Elena. He knelt beside her, checking her pulse and assessing the visible swelling in her right leg. "Ma'am, are you able to state your name?"
"My name is Elena Vance—no relation to you," she managed with a grimace, testing the paramedic's attentiveness. "And I did not slip. My husband pushed me."
The kitchen went dead silent. The ambient hum of the refrigerator seemed to amplify a hundredfold. Ryan’s face tightened, but he maintained a sorrowful, understanding smile, shaking his head slightly for the benefit of the officers.
"She’s been under an incredible amount of stress lately, Officer," Ryan intervened smoothly, stepping forward with his hands raised in a conciliatory gesture. "The doctors call it paranoia. She believes everyone is plotting against her. It breaks my heart to see her like this, but we’ve been managing it at home for her own safety."

Evelyn nodded solemnly, chiming in with a practiced sigh of maternal grief. "It’s true. Ever since the business pressures mounted, her mind has just... fragmented. We only wanted to protect her."
Vance looked between Ryan, Evelyn, and Elena on the floor. Standard protocol for domestic calls dictated a careful balancing act, especially in affluent homes where legal teams were always a phone call away. But Vance noticed something the others missed: Elena’s eyes were completely clear, focused, and devoid of the erratic panic associated with a psychotic break. Moreover, her hand was subtly pressing a small USB flash drive—disguised as a toy key—directly into the palm of the paramedic who was currently strapping a splint onto her leg.
