Chapter 9 - The Seattle Ghost

The morning sun filtered through the rain-streaked windows of the federal field office in downtown Seattle, casting long, pale rays across the stainless-steel interrogation table. Clara sat quietly in a stiff chair, holding a warm paper cup of black coffee between her hands while Leo slept soundly on a cot in the adjacent social services recovery room. Agent Vance placed a thick manila folder containing the offshore financial trails directly in front of her.

"The offshore account wasn't just a stash for Arthur's retirement," Agent Vance explained, leaning against the edge of the metal table. "Every single dollar Arthur and Beatrice drained from your corporate holdings over the past six months was funneled into a real estate holding firm called Meridian Holdings."

Clara frowned, tracing the edge of the paper cup with her thumb. "Meridian? Noah never did business with anyone by that name. He despised shell companies."

"He didn't," Agent Vance replied, tapping a finger on a printed corporate registry document. "The primary shareholder of Meridian Holdings isn't Arthur Sterling. And it isn't Beatrice Blackwood."

She flipped the page to reveal a certified birth certificate and a notarized adoption decree dated nearly twenty years prior, long before Clara had ever met Noah. Clara leaned in closer, her eyes scanning the faded ink of the document as the name on the paper registered in her brain, stopping her breath cold.

"Elena Vance?" Clara read aloud, looking up sharply at the federal investigator. "That's... that's your name."

"My mother was Noah Blackwood’s first legal wife," Agent Vance said quietly, her professional demeanor slipping for a fraction of a second to reveal a deep, simmering resentment. "Before he became a billionaire tech mogul, before he built this grand empire, he abandoned my mother and me in a small town outside Portland to pursue a higher social circle. Beatrice helped him bury our existence, paying my mother off with hush money to sign away our rights."

Clara stared at the investigator, the room suddenly feeling smaller, the air growing thick with decades of hidden family secrets. "So all of this... your intervention last night... it wasn't just about saving us from Arthur?"

"It was about taking back what was stolen from my family first," Agent Vance replied frankly, folding her arms across her chest. "Arthur and Beatrice thought they were the only ones playing chess in that mansion. But my father's true will—the one he drafted on his deathbed before Arthur and Beatrice forged the fake trust—names me as the primary equal heir alongside you and your son."

Before Clara could process the staggering weight of the revelation, the secure desk phone between them rang shrilly. Agent Vance picked up the receiver, listened for a few tense seconds, and her face drained of all color.

"What is it?" Clara asked, standing up from her chair.

"The transport convoy transferring Arthur and Beatrice to the federal holding facility just twenty minutes ago," Agent Vance whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "The lead transport van was broadsided by a semi-truck at the highway interchange. The guards are unconscious, and both prisoners are gone."
