Chapter 4 - Locked Quarters

The heavy oak door of the upstairs guest suite slammed shut, followed by the definitive, chilling click of an electronic deadbolt engaging from the outside. Clara stood frozen in the center of the dimly lit room, the manila folder clutched so tightly in her hands that the corners of the papers were crushed. The rain continued to beat a relentless rhythm against the glass panes, washing away any hope of an easy escape into the stormy night.

"Mommy?" a small, trembling voice called out from the darkness of the adjoining bedroom.

Clara dropped the papers onto a velvet armchair and hurried toward the sound, pushing open the half-open door to find Leo sitting up in bed, rubbing his heavy blue eyes. The remnants of his earlier tears still stained his pale cheeks, and his small frame was shivering beneath the thick blankets. Clara rushed to the bedside, gathering the eight-year-old boy into her arms and burying her face in his soft, light brown hair.

"I'm here, sweetie. Mommy is right here," she whispered fiercely, willing her voice to remain steady despite the absolute terror gripping her chest.

"Are the bad people going to make us leave?" Leo asked quietly, his blue eyes looking up at her with a maturity that broke her heart. He had heard enough shouting through the thin walls to know their world had fundamentally shattered.

"Never," Clara promised, kissing his forehead with a fierce determination. "We are going to find a way out of here, I promise you."

She spent the next hour searching the room for any possible means of communication or escape. The windows were reinforced security glass, bolted shut from the exterior frame. The landline phone on the mahogany nightstand was completely dead, the dial tone replaced by an ominous, steady hiss of static. Her cell phone, along with Arthur’s and Noah’s old devices, had been confiscated earlier that evening by the security guards downstairs. They were entirely cut off from the outside world, trapped in a gilded cage built by a family of ruthless sociopaths.

As Clara paced the length of the bedroom, trying to formulate a plan that didn't involve walking into a trap, a faint scratching sound came from the hallway outside their heavy door. She froze, holding her breath and motioning for Leo to stay quiet beneath the covers.

The sound came again—a slow, deliberate tapping against the wood, followed by a metallic scrape that sounded like a key turning in a lock that shouldn't have a duplicate.

The heavy door slowly creak open an inch, revealing a narrow strip of warm hallway light and the edge of a familiar silver key ring dangling from a pale, trembling hand.
