Chapter 3 - The Husband's Betrayal

Arthur stepped fully into the dim light of the study, his white shirt now missing its cufflinks, his expression stripped of the nervous tension he had worn downstairs. He did not look at Clara with the warmth of a husband, nor with the concern of a partner facing a common enemy. Instead, he walked past her as if she were a piece of displaced furniture and stood directly beside Beatrice, resting a familiar hand on the older woman's shoulder.

Clara staggered back, the betrayal hitting her with a physical force that knocked the breath straight from her lungs. The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity—the quiet late-night phone calls, Arthur’s sudden insistence that they move into Blackwood Manor, his reluctance to ever confront Beatrice about her venomous treatment of young Leo.

"You knew," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, trembling whisper. "All of this was a setup from the very beginning."

Arthur offered a cold, apologetic shrug that lacked any real remorse. "Business is business, Clara. Noah was brilliant, but he was sentimental. He left everything to a woman he met in a coffee shop, blinded by a summer romance. Beatrice and I built the foundations of this family long before you ever walked through these iron gates."

"Arthur, he is your stepson!" Clara cried out, her restraint finally fracturing as the raw injustice of the moment tore through her. "You watched that woman make him eat off the floor! You stood there and pretended to defend us!"

"Leo is a convenient accessory, nothing more," Arthur replied smoothly, his eyes devoid of emotion. "And you, Clara, were simply the vessel required to secure Noah’s signature on the marriage certificate before his heart finally gave out. The doctors told us he had six months. We simply helped him reach the finish line a bit faster."

Clara stared at her husband, realizing that the man she had married was a stranger, a predator wearing a familiar face. She gripped the manila folder tighter, turning sharply toward the French doors that led out to the back gardens.

"I'm going to the police," Clara declared, her voice steadying with a sudden surge of adrenaline. "I will tear this entire house down around both of you."

Before she could take a single step toward the door, Beatrice raised her hand and snapped her fingers. The heavy study door swung open wider, revealing two burly private security guards blocking the exit, their expressions blank and immovable.

"The police won't help you, my dear," Beatrice said calmly, stepping forward to block the path to the garden doors as well. "Especially when they find the heavy-duty sedatives we planted in your luggage upstairs, alongside a very convincing suicide note."
