Chapter 1 - The Broken Plate

The porcelain plate lay shattered against the cold marble floor of the grand dining room, surrounded by a mess of roasted vegetables and spilled sauce. Eight-year-old Leo sat right beside the debris, his pale skin flushed and tears streaming silently down his cheeks. His light brown hair fell into his blue eyes as he tried to muffle his quiet sobs. Standing directly over him with a posture of absolute disdain was Beatrice, the fifty-year-old matriarch of the household, her grey hair pulled back into a strict updo that matched the severe black dress she wore like armor.
"Illegitimate children eat on the floor," Beatrice said coldly, her voice cutting through the heavy tension of the formal dinner like a sharp knife.
Before Leo could shrink further into himself, Clara rushed frantically across the massive dining room. Her long brown hair whipped around her shoulders as she dropped desperately to her knees beside her son, her cream dress sweeping the polished stone. She pulled Leo up into her arms, shielding him fiercely from Beatrice.
"Don't touch my son!" Clara shouted angrily, her voice shaking with a mix of fury and protective instinct.
Arthur stepped forward immediately, his brown hair slightly disheveled, his crisp white shirt collar feeling too tight as he positioned himself between his wife and the formidable older woman. His face was a mask of tense defensiveness.
"You’re embarrassing this family!" Arthur snapped angrily, directing his frustration not at Beatrice, but at Clara, as if the child's humiliation were simply an inconvenient disruption to his evening.
Clara stood up slowly, keeping little Leo tucked safely behind her, and turned her fierce gaze directly onto Beatrice. The air in the dining room grew suffocatingly still as Clara delivered a truth that had been hidden in the shadows for years.
"This mansion belongs to Noah and me," Clara declared fiercely, her eyes blazing with quiet power. "So does the company."
Beatrice stared at her for a long, calculating second before a slow, chilling smile spread across her face, completely ignoring Arthur's bewildered gasp.

"You think a dead man's signature protects you?" Beatrice whispered, stepping closer. "Open the safe in the study tonight, Clara, and see whose name is actually on the deed."
