Chapter 13 - The Red Switch

The green glow of the security monitors cast eerie, shifting shadows across the cramped interior of the dock master's office. Beatrice slowly turned her swivel chair around, her grey hair now completely loose around her shoulders, giving her the wild, desperate look of a cornered predator. The heavy red rocker switch sat inches from her manicured fingertips, wired directly into a complex network of detonation cords snaking out through the floorboards toward the main cargo piers.
"Step away from the console, Beatrice," Clara said, her voice remarkably steady as she kept her hands visible and unthreatening, buying precious seconds. "Agent Vance and federal backup are already securing the perimeter. You have nowhere left to run."
Beatrice let out a dry, chilling laugh that rattled in her chest. "Federal backup? Agent Vance is currently pinned down behind a container three hundred yards away, dealing with Arthur's private security detail. By the time anyone reaches this office, this entire pier will be reduced to ash and saltwater."
"Why?" Clara asked, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "You already had wealth, power, and influence in this city. Why murder Noah? Why destroy an entire family just to hoard more?"
"Power isn't something you share, Clara," Beatrice spat, her eyes flashing with sudden, venomous fury. "Noah built Blackwood Enterprises on the sweat of my husband's original patents fifty years ago. He stole our legacy, and I merely took back what belonged to the Blackwood bloodline from an interloper who wandered in off the street."
"Noah didn't steal anything," a calm, deep voice echoed from the doorway behind Clara.
Beatrice froze, her hand hovering a millimeter above the red switch as her eyes widened in profound shock. Dr. Marcus stepped out of the shadows of the doorway, holding a heavy digital recording device with its screen lit up in a bright blue display.
"What... what is that?" Beatrice whispered, her aristocratic composure finally shattering completely.
"It's the unedited audio confession you recorded in the study three nights ago, broadcast directly to the federal cyber-crime division's secure servers via satellite uplink," Dr. Marcus replied steadily, stepping further into the room. "The moment you press that switch, the detonation signal will trigger the automatic release of every financial crime, murder conspiracy, and forged document straight to the national news networks and the federal prosecutor's desk."
Beatrice stared at the doctor, her chest heaving as she weighed her options, the red switch glowing under her trembling finger.
Before she could push it down, a heavy shadow darkened the doorway, and Agent Vance stepped into the room with her sidearm drawn and locked directly onto Beatrice's chest.
"Hands where I can see them, Beatrice," Agent Vance commanded, her voice like ice. "It's over."
Beatrice slowly withdrew her hand from the console, a dark, defeated smile touching her lips as she leaned back in her chair. "You think arresting me changes anything? Arthur is already aboard the freighter. The true transfer of power happened an hour ago."

Before anyone could react, a massive explosion shook the ground beneath their feet, sending shockwaves rolling through the docks from the direction of the open ocean.
