Chapter 10 - The Phantom Wreckage

The wail of distant sirens cut through the heavy morning fog hanging over the interstate interchange like a shroud. The federal transport van lay crumpled against the concrete overpass barrier like an empty soda can, its rear doors ripped completely off their hinges by the force of the collision. Shards of safety glass littered the damp asphalt, glistening under the flashing red and blue lights of three arriving state trooper cruisers.

Agent Vance’s SUV slid to a sharp halt behind the wreckage, and Clara stepped out into the biting wind, pulling her coat tightly around herself. The crash site was eerily quiet, save for the crackle of emergency radio static. Two federal guards sat on the guardrail wrapped in thermal blankets, nursing bloody noses and severe concussions, while paramedics tended to their minor injuries.

"What happened?" Agent Vance demanded, flashing her badge at the state trooper in charge as she approached the twisted metal of the van.

"It wasn't an accident, Agent," the trooper replied, pointing toward deep skid marks left by a heavy vehicle that had already fled the scene. "A flatbed semi with stolen plates deliberately T-boned the transport at fifty miles per hour, pinning the front end against the divider. Before our backup could arrive from the exit ramp, a dark sedan pulled up behind the wreck, loaded both prisoners, and vanished into the logging trails heading north toward the Canadian border."

Clara walked slowly toward the ruined rear doors of the transport van, her eyes scanning the dark interior. Strewn across the floorboards were discarded zip-ties, a shattered pair of handcuffs, and a single, ink-stained business card bearing the logo of a private maritime logistics firm operating out of the Port of Tacoma.

She picked up the card, turning it over in her palm. Scrawled on the back in shaky, hurried handwriting was a single string of alphanumeric characters—a GPS coordinate located deep within the abandoned shipyard district of Tacoma.

"They're not running to Canada," Clara said softly, holding up the card for Agent Vance to see. "They're heading to the docks. They have a vessel waiting."

Agent Vance took the card, her jaw tightening as she pulled out her radio to coordinate an immediate roadblock along the northern corridor. "The Port of Tacoma is a labyrinth of private shipping containers and abandoned warehouses. If they get onto international waters before we intercept them, we might never track them down again."

"Then we don't wait for backup to clear the highway," Clara declared, her voice carrying an absolute, unyielding resolve that surprised even herself. She looked back toward the SUV where Leo was still sleeping safely under the care of a trusted social worker. "We go right now."

Agent Vance stared at Clara for a long moment, recognizing the exact same stubborn fire that had once drawn Noah Blackwood to ordinary women who refused to break under pressure. She gave a sharp nod, opened the driver's side door, and revved the engine.

"Get in, Clara," Agent Vance said grimly. "Let's go hunt down a ghost."
