Chapter 7

The downtown office of the county prosecutor’s office hummed with familiar energy. Fluorescent lights reflected off polished linoleum floors, and the distant sound of ringing telephones and hurried footsteps created a comforting symphony of structure and justice. Elena sat at her cluttered wooden desk, the laptop open before her displaying the downloaded video and audio files from her father’s kitchen. Across from her sat Marcus Vance, the senior district attorney, a man with silvering temples and sharp, analytical eyes framed by wire-rimmed glasses. He watched the footage in complete silence, his expression hardening with every passing second as Arthur’s booming voice echoed from the laptop speakers. When the video reached the moment where Arthur towered over the crying toddler, Marcus slowly closed the laptop lid with a soft click.

"This is open-and-shut child endangerment and psychological abuse," Marcus said gravely, leaning back in his leather chair. "Given his age and the clear documentation of systematic intimidation, we can secure an emergency protective order immediately. But you know what this means, Elena. As a former prosecutor, you understand the personal toll of bringing charges against a direct family member."

"I know exactly what it means," Elena replied without hesitation, her hands resting flat on the wooden surface. "For years, I excused his behavior because of his age and our history. I thought distance was enough. But seeing him tower over Lily, seeing how easily he terrorized a child who doesn't even understand the concept of rules... it ends today. If I don't hold him accountable, I'm no better than the enablers who watched him destroy our family."
