Chapter 1

The bright kitchen tile of Arthur’s suburban home felt cold beneath three-year-old Lily’s knees. Her light brown hair fell in soft wisps around a face crumpled with genuine distress. She wore a ruffled pink dress and spotless white shoes, her tiny hands trembling slightly as she stared down at the puddle of bright orange soda soaking into the grout. Next to her, a dented aluminum can lay sideways, liquid still dripping slowly toward the base of a heavy blue camping cooler. Arthur stood directly over her, his seventy-year-old frame rigid with sudden rage. His bald head gleamed under the harsh fluorescent ceiling lights, and his graying mustache bristled as his jaw tightened. His light blue checkered shirt strained across his chest as he pointed a thick, calloused finger down at the weeping child.
"You don’t touch things in my house without asking!" Arthur bellowed, his voice vibrating through the enclosed space with an intensity that rattled the ceramic mugs hanging from the nearby rack.
Lily flinched, pulling her shoulders up toward her ears. Her lower lip quivered violently, and large, clear tears spilled over her dark lashes. She looked up at her grandfather through a blur of genuine terror, her small chest rising and falling with quick, shallow breaths. She did not scream or throw a tantrum; she simply absorbed the shock of his hostility with the fragile innocence unique to a toddler.
"I’m sorry, Grandpa, I didn’t know," Lily whispered softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.

Before Arthur could deliver another harsh reprimand, Elena moved into the frame. At forty, her dark hair fell in long, neat waves over the shoulders of her soft beige sweater. She dropped gracefully to her knees on the hard tile, sliding her arm protectively around Lily’s trembling shoulder. She pulled the little girl close against her jeans-clad hip, shielding her from the older man’s towering presence. Elena did not yell, nor did she cower. Her brown eyes remained completely steady, locked onto her father with a cold, piercing clarity born from years of professional interrogation and courtroom trials.
"I spent eight years as a prosecutor," Elena said calmly, her voice chillingly level. "You just confessed on camera."
