Chapter 15

Inside the living room, sunlight poured warmly through the large bay windows, illuminating the hardwood floor where Lily sat building a towering castle out of wooden blocks. The little girl wore her favorite yellow sundress, her light brown hair tied back with a soft blue ribbon. There were no traces of the fear or trembling that had defined that morning in Arthur’s kitchen weeks ago. Elena walked into the room, kneeling down beside her daughter just as she had done on that cold kitchen tile. She smiled, watching as Lily carefully placed the final wooden block on top of her creation without it tipping over.

"Look, Mommy! I did it all by myself!" Lily exclaimed happily, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy.

Elena pulled her daughter close, wrapping her arms securely around the little girl’s small frame and breathing in the sweet scent of shampoo and innocence. The kitchen floor where the orange soda had spilled felt like a lifetime away. They had survived the shadow of tyranny, breaking the cycle of fear and intimidation once and for all. As the afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the room, Elena knew that the future belonged not to the ghosts of the past, but to the bright, safe laughter echoing through their true home.
