Chapter 11

The call with David lasted for over an hour. As they spoke, decades of shared trauma, hidden fears, and unspoken grief poured out between them. David recounted the endless perfectionism, the screaming matches over minor infractions, and the psychological conditioning that had made both of them feel entirely unworthy of love unless they achieved absolute compliance. He explained how he had spent years in therapy untangling the damage Arthur had inflicted under the guise of "building character." Listening to her brother, Elena realized how deeply her father’s toxicity had permeated their family tree. She had brought Lily to visit him out of a desperate, naive hope that grandfatherhood might soften him, that age might mellow the tyrant. Instead, she had walked her daughter right into the exact same cycle of fear she had spent her entire adult life trying to escape.
"You don't need to fly back just yet, David," Elena said gently, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "The digital evidence from the kitchen is airtight. But having your deposition on record regarding his historical behavior will solidify the case against him. We aren't just protecting Lily anymore. We're closing the book on forty years of domestic terror."
