Chapter 3

Standing near the refrigerator, sixty-year-old Martha watched the confrontation unfold with an expression of cold disapproval. Her silver-gray hair was cropped into a sharp, modern bob that accentuated the stern angles of her jaw. Dressed in a dark blue blouse and neatly pressed jeans, Martha stepped forward, her posture rigid. As a long-time family friend and neighbor who managed Arthur’s household accounts, she had spent years acting as an enabler to his authoritarian temperament, excusing his volatility as the harmless eccentricities of an aging engineer. Now, seeing the confrontation turn legal, Martha felt a sharp surge of misplaced loyalty toward the patriarch. She turned her gaze directly toward the hidden camera lens mounted on the wall, her voice sharp and uncompromising as she addressed the invisible audience beyond the room.

"Your daughter deserved it for being disrespectful," Martha stated firmly, her chin lifting slightly. "Arthur built this household on discipline. Children today have no respect for boundaries. A firm hand is the only way to teach them right from wrong."

Lily buried her face deeper into Elena’s beige sweater, whimpering softly at the sound of Martha’s harsh endorsement of the punishment. Elena looked up at the older woman, her gaze narrowing with quiet fury. The casual defense of psychological abuse by an outsider laid bare the toxic ecosystem that had governed Arthur’s home for decades. It was an environment where control was worshipped, empathy was treated as a weakness, and intimidation was rebranded as traditional parenting. Elena realized then that Arthur’s behavior was not a sudden lapse in judgment or an isolated incident of elder frustration. It was part of a systemic pattern of dominance that Martha had not only witnessed for years but actively defended.

"That woman is an accessory to intimidation," Elena thought, keeping her voice controlled for Lily's sake. She gently kissed the top of the toddler's head before looking back up at her father, whose face had gone from pale to a dull, mottled red.
