Chapter 5

Martha shifted uncomfortably near the counter, her arms crossing defensively over her dark blue blouse. The mention of the hallway closet pierced the dense atmosphere of denial she had helped cultivate. She opened her mouth to interject, to dismiss the accusation as a hysterical exaggeration, but caught the chilling sharpness in Elena’s eyes and closed her lips tightly. Martha had spent thirty years convincing herself that Arthur’s strict methods were simply old-school discipline, but hearing specific details of a closet confinement stripped away her ability to play the ignorant bystander. She looked away, staring fixedly at the stainless-steel toaster on the counter, suddenly unwilling to meet anyone's gaze. The illusion of domestic harmony that had insulated the household for decades was shattered, leaving only exposed nerves and harsh truths.
Arthur’s face contorted into an expression of intense shock, his eyes wide and frozen in fear as the full weight of his daughter’s words sank in. He had assumed Elena was entirely dependent on him for childcare during her transition back to full-time legal work, believing she would tolerate his outbursts out of sheer necessity. He had never imagined she was quietly building a case against him, gathering digital proof to dismantle his domestic kingdom piece by piece. The silence in the kitchen stretched on, heavy and absolute, broken only by the distant sound of traffic passing on the suburban street outside.
"Pack your things," Elena instructed quietly, leaving no room for argument. "We are leaving right now. And before the end of the day, my colleagues will receive copies of every file from this house."
