Chapter 6

The transition from the oppressive warmth of the kitchen to the crisp afternoon air of the driveway felt like waking from a heavy fever dream. Elena carried Lily firmly against her hip, the toddler’s white shoes tucked neatly under the hem of her ruffled pink dress. Behind them, the front door remained closed, sealing away the toxic remnants of Arthur’s domain. The sunlight felt blinding after the fluorescent glare of the tiled kitchen, illuminating the quiet suburban street where maple trees dropped dry leaves onto the asphalt. Elena strapped Lily carefully into her car seat in the back of the sedan, making sure the safety harness clicked securely into place. She offered the little girl a soothing smile, brushing a stray lock of light brown hair away from her damp forehead.
"We're going home now, sweetheart," Elena whispered, her voice warm and reassuring. "You did so good. Everything is going to be okay."
Lily nodded sleepily, her eyelids heavy from the emotional exhaustion of the morning. Elena closed the car door softly, walking around to the driver's side. As she gripped the handle, she caught sight of Arthur standing by the living room window through the sheer white curtains. He was watching her, his silhouette motionless against the glass. The imposing patriarch was reduced to a frightened old man hiding behind suburban glass, realizing that his lifetime of control had finally collapsed under the weight of accountability. Elena did not wave or offer a parting word. She climbed into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and pulled away from the curb without a backward glance.
