Chapter 9: The Trial Begins**

Courtroom 402 of the New York County Family Court was suffocatingly warm. Sunlight poured through tall arched windows, illuminating the stark contrast between the two tables.

On the petitioner’s side sat Eleanor Sterling, surrounded by four corporate attorneys, smelling of expensive French perfume and wearing dark designer wool. On the respondent’s side sat Clara, dressed in a simple navy blouse bought from a thrift store, her posture regal and composed, with Marcus Vance beside her.

Toby sat in the private family consultation room adjacent to the court, clutching his father’s old brass compass.

Julian Ross took the floor first, delivering a venomous opening statement. He painted Clara as an unfit, transient mother who dragged a fragile heir into burning alleys, low-wage kitchens, and dangerous neighborhoods.

“Your Honor,” Ross proclaimed grandly, “this child is entitled to security, world-class education, and stable heritage. The Sterling family offers permanence. The respondent offers chaos and peril.”

Judge Hastings nodded solemnly, looking toward Clara with an expression of skeptical weariness. “Counsel for the defense, you may proceed.”

Marcus Vance stood up, buttoning his worn suit jacket. “Thank you, Your Honor. We do not deny that Mrs. Evans lacks millions in the bank. But today, we intend to prove that the only danger facing Toby Evans is the manufactured cruelty funded directly by the petitioner.”

Eleanor leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with icy contempt.
