Chapter 10: The Evidence Speaks**

Marcus did not call character witnesses. Instead, he called Vance—his brother—to the witness stand.

The courtroom erupted into quiet murmurs as the Sterling family’s private investigator took the oath. Eleanor’s face drained of color; she gripped Julian Ross’s arm with vice-like intensity.

“State your name and occupation for the record,” Marcus instructed.

“David Vance. Private security consultant and former investigator for Sterling Holdings.”

Over the next two hours, David methodically laid out the paper trail: encrypted text messages from Julian Ross ordering surveillance, cash withdrawals matching the timeline of the bakery fire, and audio recordings of Eleanor instructing staff to fabricate reports to Child Protective Services.

“Did Mrs. Eleanor Sterling explicitly instruct you to make Clara Evans’ living conditions unlivable?” Marcus asked.

David looked directly at Eleanor. “Her exact words were: *‘Break her until she gives him back.’*”

Judge Hastings’ demeanor shifted instantly. The polished arrogance of the Sterling legal defense dissolved into frantic objections and frantic whispering.

“Objection, Your Honor! This evidence is unverified and obtained through breach of non-disclosure agreements!” Ross shouted, sweat beading across his forehead.

“Overruled, Mr. Ross,” Judge Hastings boomed, his gavel coming down hard. “When public safety and perjury are involved, privilege does not apply. Continue, Mr. Vance.”
