Chapter 14: An Echo of Regret**

One cold October afternoon, two years later, an elderly woman stepped out of a modest taxi on the Maine coastline.

Eleanor had aged ten years in twenty-four months. Her hair was completely silver now, unstyled, and her designer coat hung loosely on her frail frame. The legal battles were over, her public life ruined, and her heart hollowed out by the sheer weight of her pride.

Through the glass window of *The Compass* bakery, she watched.

She saw Toby, now ten years old, tall and healthy, helping a little girl choose a pastry while laughing heartily. She saw Clara standing behind the counter, greeting customers with radiant, genuine warmth. There was an unmistakable glow of peace and happiness that Eleanor’s billions could never have purchased.

Eleanor reached for the brass door handle, but her hand froze.

She remembered the slap in the penthouse. She remembered Arthur’s pleading eyes years ago before he walked away. She realized, with devastating clarity, that her obsession with control had destroyed everything she claimed to protect.

She couldn't go in. She had no place in their light.

Tears—rare, heavy, and silent—slipped down Eleanor’s wrinkled cheeks. She turned back toward the waiting cab, leaving only a single white envelope on the wooden bench outside the shop.
