Chapter 6: The Legal Ambush**

The following morning, before Clara could even wash the scent of smoke from her hair, two marshals accompanied by child protection officers arrived at the temporary shelter in the community center.
“Clara Evans?” the lead officer stated, handing her a blue-backed legal document. “You are being served with an emergency ex-parte order. Allegations of severe endangerment, homelessness, and structural instability.”
Behind them stood Eleanor’s high-priced legal team, pristine in bespoke tailored suits, led by Julian Ross, a lawyer infamous for dismantling custody claims with surgical cruelty.
“Clara,” Ross said smoothly, offering a condescending smirk. “Mrs. Sterling is prepared to offer you a settlement. Five hundred thousand dollars to sign over full parental guardianship. Walk away clean. The boy gets a private tutor, a warm bed, and an Ivy League trust fund. You get to start over.”
Toby clung to Clara’s waist, terrified by the uniforms.
Clara looked at the paper, then directly into Julian Ross’s cold eyes. She tore the emergency custody petition in half, letting the white pieces flutter onto the shelter floor.
“Tell Eleanor that every dollar she spends trying to buy my son is a monument to her own loneliness,” Clara said, her voice resonant and unyielding. “I will see her in court. And she better bring an army.”

Ross’s smile vanished, replaced by an icy sneer. “You have no lawyer, no money, and no home, Clara. The court date is in seventy-two hours. Good luck.”
