Chapter 7: An Unexpected Ally**

Desperate and running out of time, Clara sat inside a public legal aid clinic in Lower Manhattan. The waiting room was crowded with exhausted families, but Clara refused to leave.

When her name was finally called at five in the evening, she entered a cramped office stacked ceiling-high with case files. Behind the desk sat Marcus Vance—not the private investigator, but his estranged brother, a passionate pro-bono defense attorney known for taking down corporate predators.

Marcus looked over Clara’s charred hands and the fire department’s incident report.

“Julian Ross doesn't lose often, Mrs. Evans,” Marcus said, leaning forward. “He uses delay tactics and deep financial pockets to drain mothers until they surrender out of sheer exhaustion.”

“I won’t surrender,” Clara replied quietly. “Arthur died protecting Toby from that family’s narcissism. If I give up now, my son will grow up believing people are just property to be bought, controlled, and discarded.”

Marcus stared at her for a long moment. He opened a bottom drawer, pulling out a voice recording device and a thick manila folder labeled *Sterling Trust LLC*.

“My brother works for Eleanor Sterling,” Marcus revealed quietly. “He quit this morning. The fire at the bakery crossed a line even he couldn't stomach. He gave me their playbook. If we do this, we don't just defend your custody. We expose the entire rotten empire.”
