Chapter 5 - The Red Skull

The glowing red skull pulsed rhythmically on the tactical tablet, casting a macabre crimson light across Arthur’s weathered face. He tapped the glass screen repeatedly, but the operating system remained locked in a hard loop, unresponsive to his biometric override codes.

"They've jammed the local frequency," Officer Ramirez said, watching the tablet over Arthur's shoulder. His face had gone pale beneath his uniform cap. "Colonel, if our comms are dead, no one outside knows we're trapped in here. The perimeter guards... they're walking into a trap."

Elena moved slowly toward the observation window, her eyes fixed on the young man still lying motionless inside the isolation cube. The erratic red lines on his heart monitor had begun to stabilize, flattening into a steady, rhythmic beat that sounded less like human pulses and more like a heavy mechanical engine.

"It's too late," Elena murmured, her voice hollow. "The compound isn't just reacting to his biology anymore. It's synchronizing with the hospital's mainframe."

Arthur slipped the useless tablet into his pocket with calm deliberation. He turned his attention back to the battered steel door, where the rhythmic slamming had suddenly stopped, replaced by an eerie, heavy silence.

"They want the data, but they want the boy alive," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Which means the gas they're pumping through the ventilation system isn't meant to kill us. It's a paralytic."

Officer Ramirez immediately reached up, ripping the protective respirator filter from his utility belt and slamming it onto his face with practiced speed. He tossed a second filter to Arthur, who caught it out of the air with one hand and screwed it into his collar-mounted respirator.

"Director Vance, your mask!" Ramirez yelled through his filter, his voice muffled.

Elena didn't move. She stood beside the glass, her dark-red silk dress fluttering as a plume of faint, grey vapor began to hiss from the ceiling vents above her head. She looked at Arthur with a strange, tragic calm, her crimson lips curving into a melancholic smile.

"I don't need a mask, Officer," Elena said softly, her eyelids growing heavy. "I was the first one to test the compound. I’m already immune... or already dead."

Before Ramirez could reach her, Elena’s knees buckled, and she collapsed gracefully onto the linoleum floor, her breathing slowing to a crawl as the grey mist blanketed the room.

Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Elena by the shoulders and dragging her away from the direct path of the vent just as the air pressure in the room dropped sharply. The metal nameplate on the desk clattered to the floor, dislodged by the sudden suction.

Through the thick glass of the observation window, the young man inside the isolation cube suddenly sat straight up, his eyes glowing a brilliant, unnatural amber in the dark.
