Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Ward

The heavy thud of the security door locking from the outside echoed down the corridor, sealing the makeshift command post. Arthur didn't look back at Elena. Instead, he stepped past the metal table and approached the observation window overlooking the isolation ward. Inside the glass cube, a young man lay motionless on a gurney, hooked up to a tangle of monitors that flickered with erratic red lines.

Officer Ramirez shifted nervously beside the door, his hand resting instinctively on his holster. "Sir, dispatch is calling for a status update. The local police chief wants to know why federal troops just blockaded the perimeter."

"Tell them a hazardous material containment protocol is in effect," Arthur said without turning his head. His breath fogged slightly against the cold glass of the observation window. "Tell them anyone attempting to breach the perimeter is to be detained indefinitely under national security directives."

Elena recovered her composure, her fingernails digging deep into her crossed arms. The silk of her dress rustled as she stepped away from the door, her high heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor.

"You think a military lockdown is going to hide what happened here, Arthur?" Elena asked, her tone dripping with venom. "The trials failed. The compound mutated inside him. If you move him to a secondary site, the containment breach will be traced directly back to your division."

Arthur turned slowly, his weathered face mask-like in its emotional restraint. "The trials didn't fail, Elena. They were sabotaged. And based on the security logs I decrypted twenty minutes ago, the access code used to release the airborne strain into the general intake valve belonged to your administrative credential."

Officer Ramirez stiffened, his eyes darting between the two superiors. He unclipped his radio, his thumb hovering over the transmit button. "Director Vance... did you say a sabotage?"

Elena let out a sharp, humorless laugh, though her eyes remained locked on Arthur with lethal intensity. "He's lying, Officer. Look at him. He's a ghost from an obsolete cold war unit trying to bury his own operational failures before Congress launches the budget hearings next week."

"The boy in there isn't just a patient," Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting off any further argument. He walked back to the metal table, picking up his badge and slipping it into his pocket. "He's patient zero of a synthetic strain designed to rewrite human DNA. And someone inside this hospital wanted him to wake up."

The overhead lights flickered violently, plunging the room into a deep, blood-red emergency glow. A synthesized voice blared from the ceiling speakers: Structural integrity compromised in Sub-Level Four.
