Chapter 14 - The Rooftop Extraction

The cold night air hit them like a physical blow as they stepped out onto the wide, open expanse of the hospital roof. Above them, the heavy rotors of two dark military transport helicopters churned the clouds into a swirling vortex, casting blinding spotlights down onto the helipad.

The sound was deafening, the wind whipping Elena’s hair and the torn silk of her red dress into a chaotic frenzy. Armed federal agents in crisp tactical uniforms swarmed out of the lead chopper, their rifles held at a low ready as they secured the perimeter.

Officer Ramirez handed Vane over to two federal MPs, who immediately escorted the handcuffed director into the rear cabin of the transport chopper. Ramirez turned back to Arthur, snapping a crisp, respectful salute.

"It’s been an honor, Colonel," Ramirez shouted over the roar of the engines.

Arthur returned the salute with a sharp nod. "Take the transport back to headquarters, Ramirez. File your report strictly by the book. Mention nothing about the synthetic strain's capabilities."

Ramirez hesitated, casting a quick glance toward David, who stood quietly beside Elena near the edge of the helipad. "And them, sir?"

"They're not on the manifest," Arthur replied flatly. "They never were."

Ramirez understood immediately. He gave another sharp nod, turned, and climbed aboard the second chopper as its doors slid shut with a heavy thud.

Elena held David tightly as the rotor wash battered them from all sides. She looked across at Arthur, her expression filled with a quiet, profound realization. "The extraction team is going to report us missing within the hour, Arthur. The Department won't just stop looking."

"They won't have to look," Arthur said, reaching into his brown jacket and pulling out a small, encrypted data drive—the exact physical archive containing every file on Project Omega. He walked over to the edge of the helipad, hovering the drive directly over the dark, open drop far below the hospital roof.

"Arthur, no!" Elena called out, taking a half-step forward. "That's the only proof of what they did to us!"

"That's the only chain keeping you both tied to their war machine," Arthur replied calmly. He let go of the drive, watching it plunge down into the darkness until it disappeared entirely from sight.

The lead transport chopper lifted off the helipad, its landing lights glowing brightly as it ascended into the stormy night sky, carrying Vane and Ramirez away into the distance.

Arthur turned back to face Elena and David. The heavy wind began to die down as the second chopper prepared for departure. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of civilian car keys, tossing them cleanly through the air to Elena, who caught them instinctively.

"There's a black sedan parked in Sector Four of the underground garage," Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly over the fading hum of the engines. "The ignition code is my old service number. Drive straight through the county line before dawn. Don't look back."

Elena stared at the keys in her hand, her eyes welling with unexpected tears. "And you, Arthur? Where will you go?"

Arthur turned his head slowly, glaring out toward the horizon where the first faint streaks of dawn were beginning to break through the dark clouds with a cold, resolute look.

May you like

"I have a few loose ends to tie up with the board," Arthur said sternly.
