Chapter 13 - The Green Signal

The emerald light washed over the catwalk, casting a cool, calming hue across the faces of the exhausted group. The deafening whine of the reactor core instantly dropped into a low, steady hum as the automated control rods dropped firmly into place, locking the nuclear reaction into a safe, dormant state.

Vane sagged limply in Arthur’s grip, his knees buckling as the adrenaline completely drained from his system. Arthur released his grip, letting the corporate director slump onto the metal grating like a discarded rag doll.

Officer Ramirez let out a long, shuddering breath, lowering his rifle and leaning heavily against the railing. "We... we actually did it. The core stabilized."

"The core is safe," David said, his amber eyes slowly fading back to a deep, natural hazel brown as the glowing light receded from his pupils. He swayed slightly on his feet, his youthful posture suddenly slumping with profound, overwhelming exhaustion.

Elena was by his side in a heartbeat, catching him as he fell against her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his jacket as silent tears finally broke through her rigid composure. "I've got you, David. I've got you. It's over."

Arthur watched them for a long moment, his weathered face softening just a fraction. He turned back to the control console, picking up his tactical tablet, which had finally rebooted to display a clear, steady satellite connection to Washington.

"Colonel Geoliter," a crisp, authoritative voice crackled over the tablet's speaker. "This is Joint Chiefs Command. We lost your telemetry thirty minutes ago. Report status."

Arthur pressed the transmit button, his voice steady and commanding. "This is Geoliter. Facility containment breach neutralized. The rogue board members are detained, and the primary bio-subject is secured under medical quarantine."

"Copy that, Colonel," the voice responded. "Extract choppers are touching down on the roof now. Secure the perimeter and prepare for immediate transport to a secure federal installation."

Arthur clicked off the transmission. He looked down at Vane, who was still huddled on the floor, nursing his scorched hand. Ramirez stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel cuffs from his tactical belt and snapping them securely around Vane’s wrists.

"On your feet, Director," Ramirez said coldly, hauling Vane up by his arms. "You've got a lot of explaining to do to a federal magistrate."

As Ramirez led the captive director toward the exit stairs, Arthur turned to Elena and David. The young man was standing upright now, leaning on his mother for support, his breathing slow and natural.

"We need to move before the extraction team gets down here," Arthur said quietly, adjusting his jacket. "The Department will want answers about Project Omega, and I don't intend to let them turn this boy into a lab rat ever again."

Elena looked up at Arthur, a complicated mix of gratitude and old rivalry in her eyes. "Why are you helping us, Arthur? After everything that happened... why not just let the military take him?"

Arthur looked away, staring down into the dormant reactor pit before answering. "Because twelve years ago, I signed the order that started this nightmare. It's time I finished it the right way."
