Chapter 15 - The Dawn of a New Protocol

The black sedan rolled smoothly across the deserted county line checkpoint just as the first golden rays of the morning sun broke over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet.
Elena gripped the steering wheel with steady hands, her eyes fixed on the empty highway stretching out endlessly before them. In the passenger seat, David sat comfortably, resting his head against the window. His amber eyes were gone, replaced by a warm, completely human hazel brown as he watched the scenery blur past in the morning light.
"Are we safe now, Mom?" David asked quietly, his voice sounding entirely like the young man he was meant to be before the world tore him apart.
Elena reached across the console, taking his hand in hers and squeezing it gently. "We're safe, David. We're going somewhere far away from all of this. A place where no one can ever find us."
Back at the federal command center two hundred miles away, the morning briefing was already underway in a sleek, windowless conference room.
A senior intelligence official stood at the head of a polished mahogany table, clicking through a digital slide deck on a massive wall screen. The screen displayed a stark, official report marked with a bold, red classification stamp: Project Omega – Terminated.
"Director Vane is currently in federal custody pending trial for unauthorized bio-containment breach," the official announced to the seated board members, his voice clipped and professional. "As for Colonel Arthur Geoliter... his resignation was received via encrypted transmission an hour ago. All operational ties to his division have been officially severed."
At the far end of the table, an older woman with sharp eyes and an immaculate grey suit leaned forward, her fingers steepled as she stared at the final slide on the screen—a blank, empty data file.
"And the subject?" she asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "Did they recover patient zero?"
The intelligence official paused, clearing his throat slightly as he clicked the remote, turning off the projector and plunging the room into normal lighting.
"The search teams searched the entire hospital perimeter, ma'am," the official replied, his expression carefully neutral. "There was no trace of the boy. According to the final security logs... the file was completely erased from the municipal database by an unknown high-level clearance code."

The older woman sat back in her chair, a slow, unreadable smile touching the corners of her mouth as she looked out the glass window toward the rising sun.
"Let him go," she whispered softly, folding her hands in her lap. "Let's see what he builds next."
