Chapter 11 - The Core Threshold

The conduit abruptly opened into a massive, cavernous subterranean chamber housing the hospital's auxiliary nuclear reactor. The massive cylindrical core hummed with a terrifying, high-pitched whine, its status display flashing an angry, cascading series of warning codes in bright crimson text.

David and Elena emerged from the shaft first, dropping lightly onto the metal catwalk that spanned the dizzying drop above the reactor pit. Arthur and Ramirez scrambled out right behind them, coughing as they sucked in the heavy, ozonated air of the chamber.

"The entire cooling grid has been bypassed," Ramirez shouted over the deafening whine of the core, his hands gripping the metal railing as he looked down into the glowing blue pit below. "Look at the terminal! The manual purge levers have been welded shut from the outside."

Arthur rushed to the primary control console, slamming his palm against the emergency housing. The glass cover was intact, but the digital interface was completely dead, wiped clean by a high-voltage surge.

"They didn't just weld the levers," Arthur said, his jaw set in grim determination. "They routed a complete system wipe through the mainframe. The core is going critical in less than ninety seconds."

Elena stepped up beside him, her hands trembling as she stared at the cascading numbers on the dead screen. "There has to be a hard reboot sequence. A physical bypass."

"There is," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the shadows near the far stairwell.

All four of them whipped around. Standing on the upper landing of the catwalk was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his face was entirely devoid of expression. He held a heavy-duty remote detonator in one gloved hand, his thumb resting casually over the central red button.

"Director Vance," the man said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the reactor. "It seems you always manage to bring your work with you wherever you go."

"Vane," Elena hissed, taking a sharp step forward before Arthur pulled her back. "You sold us out to the highest bidder."

"I sold us to the future, Elena," Vane replied, a thin, polite smile touching his lips. "The board realized months ago that Project Omega couldn't be contained within the hospital walls. It needed a catalyst. A clean slate. And what better catalyst than a localized nuclear meltdown to explain away the missing bio-data?"

Arthur slowly lowered his right hand toward his sidearm, keeping his body angled to shield Elena and Ramirez. "You'll die in this blast too, Vane. You and everyone else in this facility."

"Not me, Colonel," Vane said, his smile widening slightly as he raised the remote. "My extraction chopper is waiting on the roof. And as for you... well, you've always been terribly bad at retirement."

May you like

Vane pressed his thumb down firmly on the red button.
