Chapter 6 - The Emergency Lockdown

The sudden loss of light was accompanied by a deep, bone-rattling thrum that vibrated up through the concrete floor. Red emergency strobes flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, erratic shadows across the towering server racks.
"David?" Elena gasped, her hands grasping blindly for his shirt sleeves in the dark. "What’s happening? Is this a power failure?"
"No," David’s voice came from inches away, tight and breathless. "That’s the secondary containment purge. The system detected an unauthorized access override when you entered the subterranean corridor. It thinks there’s a biological breach in the upper sectors."
A harsh, automated klaxon began to wail overhead, its metallic shriek drowning out the hum of the cooling fans. Warning. Sector Four quarantine active. All personnel must report to the decontamination airlock immediately.
"We have to get Toby," Elena said, panic overriding her fear as she yanked herself away from David’s grip, stumbling blindly toward the heavy steel door they had entered through. "My son is still down here, David! You said he was in quarantine—where did Harrison take him?"
"Harrison isn't part of the research staff, Elena," David called out through the strobing red light, his voice sharp and urgent. "He’s a compliance officer sent by the Board of Directors to verify if Toby’s behavioral suppression metrics are holding steady. If they aren't... they terminate the neural link."
Elena froze with her hand resting on the cold metal door frame. The words hung in the crimson-tinted air like jagged glass. Terminate the neural link.
"What does that mean, David?" she whispered, turning back to face him as the strobe lights caught the grim, resolute set of his jaw. "What did you and the Board do to my son?"
David didn't answer right away. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy iron key—completely different from the sleek digital passes used throughout the facility. He tossed it across the console desk. It skidded across the glass and dropped softly onto the floor near Elena’s feet.
"That key opens the manual maintenance hatch behind the primary server bank," David said rapidly, stepping back toward the central console as the server racks began to retract mechanically into the ceiling with a deafening screech of grinding gears. "It leads to the sub-basement cooling tunnels. Harrison is taking Toby to the clean room for final extraction. If you want your son back alive, you need to run."

The grey door behind David suddenly blew inward with a violent hiss of compressed air, and a wall of thick, white cryogenic fog poured into the room.
